My favorite picks
Valeriy Faustov 12.04.2021
I started playing acoustic guitar recently - and for the record, I am more of a rhythm player / strummer. My first guitar was one of those combo box guitars that come with everything - guitar, amp, picks, strap etc - for a few hundred bucks. After I played on that a while I wanted to get a nicer, more advanced guitar. I ended up purchasing a Taylor 114ce Acoustic Electric.

Anyway, when I first got my guitar home I noticed that while doing some basic strumming of chords with a pick (most notably G and D) my guitar was giving out this echo-y reverb-y sound that was highly noticeable and didn't sound right. Almost as if a small crash symbol was being played as well. I was disappointed with the sound and disappointed with my purchase. I didn't know what to do... Was it the strings? Was this guitar not meant for rhythm guitar style playing?

Then I realized - those picks that came with that combo box guitar (that I was still using for my new guitar) were very plastic-y, very hard. I started wondering if the picks were the culprit. I started doing some research for picks that were good for rhythm guitar / strumming. I found out about the Dunlop Tortex picks so decided to give them a shot. I decided to pull the trigger on some smaller / lighter ones as that seemed to be a recommendation if you are a strummer.

I ended up trying out the .60mm gauge - on the lighter end, but not ultra flimsy... Once I started playing with these IT MADE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE! I can't stress enough how much more amazing my guitar sounds when I play. Chords are bright, full, crisp - and most importantly - that annoying reverb sound is gone. These picks are durable, light and smooth. All my guitar needed was a more delicate touch. I am extremely happy with my purchase. Come to find out, the Dunlop Tortex .60mm is the same exact pick that Dave Matthews uses - and I can totally see why!

Don't underestimate how much the right pick will have on the sound of your guitar with your playing style!

I first tried them in 2005, or 06, never looked any other, I love playing with them. I use these for electric and .73 for the acoustic.

Tortex...some of the best picks out there
I started playing guitar on Tortex's, and I'm going to use them for a very long time. Great all-around guitar picks. Nothing fancy, but they do their job well.
Great picks. The grip surface is soft and smooth and actually works pretty well. They slip if you start playing super heavy with them, but that's not what they're designed for. The yellow (.73) is one of my go-to picks for guitar. I tend to stay away from anything thicker than that because the squared edges make a clicking sound that I don't like. A lot of people don't have a problem with it, but I just prefer to have smooth, round tone without any extra string noise.
Excellent build quality. They're flexible and resilient, and they hardly wear at all. I've had the same yellow Tortex for 2 or so years now and it's worn less than half a millimeter. I don't like how the logo wears off very quickly, but it's not a big deal. Broken-in Tortex's look cool. I just wish they could stamp the logo into the pick rather than on the surface, like with the Gator Grips and Delrin 500's.
The price is a pretty good price for a dozen of these well-made picks. And a dozen will last you a really long time.

LS
Tortex—as good as Ultex?
Love Style O 30.07.2023
I compared prices of packs of Tortex and Ultex plectrums on 30 July 2023.

12 Tortex .73 (item n. 228306)—€7.50 (about €0.63 each).
6 Ultex .73 (item n. 151422)—€5.90 (about €0.98 each).

The difference in price is rather trivial; so it comes down to appearance, feel, and sound.

Tortex .73 plectrums are yellow; I dropped several and had no trouble finding them!
Ultex .73 plectrums have a translucent off-white colour; I dropped one and couldn't find it.

Totrex and Ultex feel about the same, but I prefer the grip of TUSQ ST .68 plectrums.

I strummed a steel string acoustic guitar with the different plectrums and didn't hear any difference!

It seems a key factor is a plectrum's thickness.

I start using these instead of the green and purple pics, noticed less thumb pain after a long run of shows, but they still provide the articulation I’m looking for

Great picks, fantastic grip and weight, great build quality and they last for ages if you can avoid people "borrowing" them from you permanently. My go-to picks.

I am using them constantly for my acoustic guitar and currently, I did not find a better replacement for those picks.
But keep in mind that everyone has their own needs and picks choices are different from man to man.
