Time to spread those creative wings

The UNIT-4 Wireless+ studio monitors from AIAIAI combine low-latency wireless technology with battery power, thus opening up a whole range of new options for creators who want to produce music on the go: The only cable that these compact and robust speakers really need is a charging cable. Loss of sound quality is a price that most users will not be willing to pay for this degree of freedom, however, but they need not worry, as the UNIT-4 Wireless+ speakers deliver a professional-level linear frequency response of 50Hz to 20kHz that can rival that of significantly larger monitors. Each speaker has a volume of three litres and a footprint of just 11.5x15.5mm, and tips the scales at just 2.5kg, which makes the set compact and light enough to fit into a piece of luggage for longer journeys and thus makes for a far greater degree of portability than conventional monitoring solutions can offer.

The freedom of wireless design

In order to operate the low-latency Wireless+ technology, the user will need the transmitter included in the scope of delivery, which can be connected to signal sources such as laptops. The UNIT-4 speakers are additionally equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, allowing them to be paired in the usual manner without an adapter, and as is now virtually par for the course with technical devices, there is also a dedicated mobile app (available on Apple Store now and coming soon for Android devices) with which the user can adjust the sound to suit the situation (and their mood) and change the colour of the LED ring around the woofer. With all of this on offer, it seem rather bizarre to not connect the UNIT-4 speakers wirelessly, but AIAIAI has nonetheless allowed for this eventuality by providing both a 6.35mm jack and 3.5mm mini-jack connection.

Sophisticated yet tough

The AIAIAI UNIT-4 monitor speakers are a virtually unparalleled solution that provides a high-quality studio sound for users creating on the go, who can thus take their production sessions out of the confines of the studio and work wherever they like - whether it's in a holiday apartment, at a friend's place, or in the rehearsal room. With up to 20 hours' operation on a single battery charge - and the added bonus that the batteries can be fully recharged in just two hours - users can also work for long periods without worrying about running out of power. The speaker housings are made entirely from scratch-proof recycled plastic that is robust enough to handle life on tour, and the strategically placed rubber strips provide additional protection and decouple the speakers from the surface on which they are placed. The bass reflex openings in turn double as carrying handles, while the protective metal front grilles are held in place by magnets.

About AIAIAI

The Danish company AIAIAI was founded in 2006 and produces headphones exclusively. Instead of offering a wide variety of different headphone models, Aiaiai has developed a modular approach, by which components are individually selected in order to create a final, customised product. To this end, AIAIAI has an online configurator which tailors each pair of headphones to the customer’s specifications. However, the idea is not only to create personalised headphones but also to ensure their sustainability. Instead of the user having to purchase a completely new pair of headphones if a defect occurs or if their application or sonic expectations change, AIAIAI offers its customers replacement, retrofit, and upgrade parts.

Featuring sustainability

Whether they are on tour, meeting up with friends for a jam in the park, or having a relaxed music session at home, users can always be sure of studio-quality sound from the AIAIAI UNIT-4 Wireless+ speakers, with the added bonus that they have been designed to be repairable: With just a pair of screwdrivers, the speakers can be opened up and the defective component quickly replaced, whether it's a battery that has reached the end of its service life or a driver that has worn out. All of the larger components are made from 100% recycled plastic, and AIAIAI offers a range of accessories that include a bumper case made from recycled silicone, a high-quality carrying case with space for both speakers as well as chargers and other accessories, and a set of silicone isolation pads that are designed to enhance the stereo image and clarity of the sound produced by the speakers.

In the spotlight: Wireless+ Link

The widely popular Bluetooth technology delivers a high-quality audio signal, but this is still far inferior to the standards found in professional applications, with potential signal dropouts, noise interference, and most of all a high level of latency (80ms or more). AIAIAI's Wireless+ Link technology, on the other hand, delivers an extremely low and consistent latency of just 16ms, which is achieved through features such as a dual-antenna design and, thanks to the barely perceptible delay, allows audio productions (such as instrumental mixes) to be created and MIDI controllers to be used in a far more direct manner than with a Bluetooth connection. And while even the best Bluetooth codecs are no match for uncompressed audio, W+ Link transfers audio data in CD quality (44.1kHz/16-bit), with the added benefit that this larger bandwidth helps to prevent signal dropouts and interference.

Brilliant idea but what about its implementation?

First of all, I would like to give credit to the people behind AIAIAI for taking the risk in the R&D of these speakers. You never know if people are going to buy them, until they're out on the shelves, after all...

At 800 euro (retail), these speakers come to affirm AIAIAI’s already longstanding tradition to price their products well into the premium bracket. I own a couple of TMA-2s (including the most expensive ot the bunch - Wireless+ Studio) and to say that I have been left deeply unimpressed by the brand in the past, would be a massive understatement. Ordering the UNIT-4, my main concern was if they even had a chance of being worth that price premium. Now that I finally own them, I’m impressed.

This is the brand's first step out of the headphone realm and I want to be honest here - they did a (damn) fine job in presenting the UNIT-4 to the customer! Out of the box, the UNIT-4 screams business. AIAIAI adopted a clean, minimalistic (in the most Scandinavian way), even utilitarian approach towards designing these little beasts. The sturdiness of the anodized steel grille reveals the designers’ firm determination to protect everything that’s behind it. The body is made of matte plastic, and although it’s easy to deliver scratches upon its surface, the material is premium and very pleasing to the touch. A subtle white LED circle around the woofer glows softly behind the grille and while adding to the premium look, provides valuable information such as battery and volume level and state of connection.

Turning them on, the AIAIAI’s mobile companion app requested a firmware update, after which I was able to connect and pair the speakers virtually hassle-free. Apart from regular Bluetooth, AIAIAI implemented their own “low latency” radio protocol specifically designed for wireless music production and DJ-ing. It’s not the best, but it works fine. Of course, precision-wise you’ll be better off with a pair of sub-5 ms wireless receiver/transmitter sets by a reputable brand to match with any other studio monitors, but that will probably cost you a bit more than the UNIT-4 and you won’t have the convenience of not having to carry separate extra gadgets. (For those of you, who wonder how does Wireless+ compare to SkaaPro latency-wise – there’s virtually no difference and you might go ahead and take this as you want 😊)

“How do they sound?” is the most important question. The sweet spot is wide enough to enjoy a decent dynamic range, suiting various music styles. They’re not 800-euro-good, but they’re good enough! I will spare you the technicalities, but I have to say that the manufacturer’s reported 103 dB SPL is a bit on the optimistic side. To top it all off, there’s some compression at max SPL. To achieve accurate reproduction, you might want to keep the volume level in between 50% and 90%, assuming you’re using the sound interface of your Macbook. Here I have to admit that the EQ presets in the companion app are not only usable, but probably the best I’ve heard so far, hats off, AIAIAI! I still haven’t measured the frequency response of these speakers, but for studio monitors, they’re balanced and easy to listen to (very important).

The battery life is phenomenal. I played a 3-hour DJ set at max volume, and I was left with around 75% of juice. They also charge very quickly, so you’ll rarely worry about battery life. One potential drawback is the lack of USB-C charging, but either way, you’ll would at least two macbook pro 16” chargers and suitable cables to match the crazy 120 watt power bricks that come bundled with the UNIT-4. To put that into perspective, SOUNDBOKS 3's charger is capable of delivering just 46.2 watts to charge its behemoth LiFePo4 batteries from 0 to full for around 5 hours.

These speakers are also lightweight (although not as light as I hoped them to be). AIAIAI offers protective silicone bumpers and a carry case, both purchased separately, and the whole set in the carry case weighs about 8 kilograms (one speaker weighs 2.5 kgs w/ grille attached).

Overpricing aside, my overall impression of these speakers is exceedingly positive and although I’m never letting go of my KRK ROKIT 5 G4s in my studio, I’ll be glad to lug the UNIT-4 with me “wherever I may roam”.
