Make your uBass easier to play
Peter7875 10.11.2014
I have a Kala Rumbler uBass, which came supplied with the standard black strings. This little instrument produces a nice sound, but you really have to work quite hard to get consistent sounding results, and the original strings have a number of drawbacks.

For instance, the low E string does not produce as loud a note as the other strings, unlike a conventional steel string bass. So you have to pluck this string with much more energy, and play the other strings more lightly to get even sounding notes. A compressor helps if your amp has one, but this can sound a bit artificial. Another problem with the black strings is that they appear to be are slightly sticky when you play. They are not actually sticky, it's just their rubbery surface produces too much friction to easily slide you fingers along them to glide notes up or down like you can on steel strings. This also makes fast sections very difficult to play. Perhaps the biggest problem with the black strings is keeping them in tune, because of their stretchy nature you are constantly re-tuning.

You tend to get used to all this when you play a uBass, and adjust your technique accordingly. However, a solution exists in the form of these Aquila Corde strings, and having changed to these, I would never go back to the black strings! The new strings are a creamy white colour, and feel firmer and less stretchy than the black ones. The volume problem between strings is almost completely solved, you still have to work a little harder on the E, but it's much better and the less rubbery feel of the new strings makes them more responsive and musical. It's also easier to play faster sections and notes, and you can just about do some sliding and gliding around.

The tuning stability is much better with these new strings, you will still be checking your tuning every now and again, but not between every song like previously. I have spoken to other uBass players and they all seem to have come to the same conclusion, the white strings are significant improvement on the original black strings. The pricing when buying from Thomann is very good too. There are some helpful videos if you search online which show how best to install the strings, particularly how you tie them to the tuning pegs. These strings will make your uBass much easier and more fun to play!

RH
Practical replacement for Ashbory strings
Richard H. 7 18.05.2014
I bought these for use on an Ashbory bass.

Compared to the silicon strings. they're easier to setup, not needing knots to stay fixed in the tuners and seem to settle into tune quicker, and hold tuning better.

Soundwise, they have a lovely deep tone, but seem to lack the range of tone you can get out of the silicon strings.

Too soon to comment on durability, but they feel sturdier than the silicon strings and I'd expect them to last longer.

Summary: if you need the full range of tone from the Ashbory, you'll want to stick with the silicon strings, but if you're looking for something a little more practical give these a try.

Very good uke bass strings. Nice feelings under your fingers, not too sticky, and the sound is huge. Recommend it

The Aquila Thundergut strings have a really nice soulnd on my Hutch Hutchinson Kala U-Bass on ADG Strings but the E string is lacking definition. I changed it for an Aquila Thunder Red that makes the job.

Don't buy these for the HB CLU-Bass Ukelele!
PeeVee 01.12.2017
Don't buy 'm for the HB CLU-Bass ukele because these strings are STANDARD on the CLU Ubass. I still find them pretty "sticky" and "rubbery" and would rather try the Aquila Thunder Reds, I've read that these strings are better and have a less sticky feeling.

Aquila UBass Strings Thundergut
Anonymous 26.02.2017
Bought these strings to replace a set on my electro acoustic Ukulele.
Fitting them was straight forward although they stretched forever and trying to keep them in tune was something else!!!
After some use I noticed they became very sticky and sliding of notes was impossible.
I read on a forum that the application of talcum powder would overcome this problem. I tried this idea and yes it instantly made the strings more playable.
They took an age to settle tuning wise and even then they are still susceptible to temperature and humidity changes and constant tuning is necessary during a performance.

Good quality strings for U bass
Matheuz 19.05.2022
I bought this set of strings along with a Harley Benton Kahuna U-bass. Initially i kept the original strings that came with the bass, however after a few weeks i wanted to try the Aquila Thundergut and the difference between them is enormous, the sound with the Aquila is better defined and they are not "sticky rubber" like the originals.
I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

Sounds good

These replaced the originals I had on an Ortega u-bass that I got second hand.

Increased the sound and playability a lot, relatively good tuning stability.

Good replacement for U-Bass strings
Anonymous 24.02.2016
I purchased a Kala U-Bass and the black default strings it came with were ok but I could feel that a little more tension would be nice. I did some research and I came up with this product, made by the italian house "Aquila", specialized in gut strings and who made these strings appositely for the U-bass.
After having put them on the instrument (they are not easy to tune by the way, just as the other ones), I could immediately notice the difference: they have more grip, more tension, they are more thick and offer more resistance to the fingering, where the black default ones were thinner, and somehow more loose. Playing was definitely easier and sound became boomier and more precise.
The U-Bass is a very different instrument if compared to the basses usually played, but if used correctly it can deliver lots of fun, plus it is super easy to carry around. It takes some time to get used to, but my advice to anyone entering its world is to switch immediately to Aquila strings, it will really make the difference in discovering this instrument's potentialities.

Full and rich sound

I was a bit suspicious for the quality, eventhough I am aware of Aquila strings and their quality, since price was much much lower then in our local music store.
Original nut on my Ubass did not fit perfectly to the G string so I had nut re-done by the guitar repair shop and G string replaced.

Even though also original strings were Aquila, this one feels a bit less sticky and maybe a bit harder then original one. As we had one small gig a few hours after the string was replaced, I was a bit scared for its intonation and how it will hold the tune, but it was just perfect. So, I can only recommend them.
