Amazing update to a classic sound.
Ben C 18.11.2020
Can't believe how well this pedal produces classic oc2 sounds. Never had an oc2 but had tried, loved, and wanted one. Didn't want an oc3 as It just wasn't the update on the oc2 I wanted, but man, THIS IS IT. Vintage -1 octave, mixed with an octave up, SOUNDS INSANE. My bass has never sounded so thick. Exactly the update I was looking for, now a proud owner of a BOSS octave pedal. Had my guitarist housemate have a go with his strat and it sounded just as amazing. Get yourself one if you want a versatile octave pedal!

I saw Mike Dawes lauding this pedal, and thought I might have use for it. Had to wait 3 months for it,(Covid times) and was slightly disappointed.
I got this pedal to have a bass tone while doing Acoustic fingerstyle blues/rock. I use a passive soundhole pick up.

In poly setting, it always plays the lowest note, and that means any note, so it can happen with syncopated style, you get the occasional unwanted octave effect on a higher note. Since I play stereo and always have a clean tone on one channel, it does not bother me much.
It tracks very well, just dont use a flanger or so before it, because it will confuse the tracking.

It has a lot of features that I have not used. I did try it on a baritone electric guitar, sounded impressive.

Con: the octave up sounds not pretty.Somewhat distorted. But I´m sure a creative rocker can do something with it.
It takes some time to get used to turning the knobs to get it to work the way you want.

Sounds great, new range feature is awesome.
SBrook91 07.11.2020
I wanted this mainly for the new range feature as it takes the lowest note of a chord and adds the octave effect. It works as described but took me a while to dial in the mix.

It should be noted that when using the range dial, anything above the "lowest" region will apply a filter so that the octave effect will not trigger on any notes above that filter. When using the "lowest" region, it applies it to the lowest note/s of a chord. It wasn't entirely clear that this was the case.

Tracking is excellent, occasionally you can hear it struggling to latch on to notes in large chords.

I
Absolutely Superb on Bass Guitar
Intercept 02.01.2024
I recently started needing an Octaver so pulled out an old Arion Octave pedal from the 1980s that was languishing in the gear cupboard. It worked fine and it made a good sound. But I'd always wanted an OC2 so after reading the reviews I ordered the OC5... Wow! This is so much better than the old Arion. It has a big confident sound and excellent tracking.

I'm preferring the Vintage (OC2) mode over the Poly, and as I'm using it on bass the -2OCT knob stays set to zero. I didn't expect to like the +1OCT but a smidge of that added to 50% Direct and 30% -1OCT makes a huge fat sound with added clarity. However, if you want the Guy Pratt signature OC2 sound that's just a few knob tweaks away.

Thoroughly recommended for bass and well worth the cost.

smooth

Found this pedal just the thing I was looking for. After some playing around (Ibanez AR420), this box showes subtleness. Great sound and enough to fiddle with. This thing will attract me to play.

Pro's
Great sound, subtle in adjusting the effect, loads of fun
Its a Boss (Roland) which means quality without the 'buzz'
Con's
Couldn't find any (some may find the box boring to look at, I didn't care about looks)
It isn't cheap

DP
Love this pedal
Damon Papakiriakou 20.02.2023
I saw many videos online about this pedal and everybody was amazed, and not without a reason. Especially if you play alone with a guitar this pedal will make sound like having a bass player with you.
But it works best if you play finger style guitar ) if you can play with your thumb the bass strings ) .
I don't use it when I have to play strum in fast tempo only in slow tempo sounds good.

NB
Does what I bought it for
Nicolas Bannwarth 12.11.2024
I use this pedal for my acoustic set and blend the octave signal separated from the dry signal to enhance the overall mix.
I basically use it like Mike Dawes does (minus the crazy skills) with the threshold targeting the lowest strings (not lowest note mode).
If anything check his rig rundown to understand how to use it, he says it all and demonstrates it like the master he is.
I don't use the lowest note mode as it would require me to turn off the pedal when only playing high notes and I can't be bothered.
Strong build like every Boss pedal, sturdy, silent, does the job and that's all I was expecting from it.
Very happy with my purchase!

G
its fun
Gingicecon 21.03.2021
I have used this with my guitar and bass and on both instruments the tracking is incredible it feels like there is no latency between your playing and the octaves. the pedal sounds great and the the selection feature for what strings you want the octaves to affect is very useful, the only thing that I some what dislike is how overpowering the upper octave is but this can be managed with how you set it. over all its a fun pedal to mess around with.

RS
Tracks slowly
Ro S 22.04.2023
I'm in a two piece band where I was hoping to use the OC-5 to generate some lower octave notes to fill up some lower end. However, the tracking is not only slow but the generated sub octave just sounds unnatural and not very pleasant to listen to. I had high hopes for the "detect the lowest note" feature but playing open chords seem to confuse the OC-5 causing the lower octave note to jump all over the place.

Well worth it
SwedMike 22.11.2021
I've always wanted to achieve the fat sound from bass octaves, and this device finally made my dreams come true. Batteries are drained pretty quickly on heavy use, but overall good quality for the money.
