The best universal clip on mic

I always love the clean sound of DPA mics. Especially 4099 for its convenience and portability. Great on any instrument and great for tiny space recording. If you have a bunch of these, you no longer need to worry about carrying tons of gears for your gigs. Transportation is a cost too.

F
Excellent Mic, really boosted the sound quality!
Finlay_77 20.02.2023
Bought this mic for my fiddle and it's great! Before, to mic up my fiddle I used a skyinbow pickup that also goes through effects pedals, which worked fine but I had some issues with sound quality.

Now I use the DPA mic alongside the skyinbow pick up and it sounds great. It provides a real clarity to the sound and has really made a difference.

I know the mics are pricy but I would say worth every penny. Have been using it for about 4/5 months now and no problems at all.

Industry Standard

Great microphone, amazing in all aspects.
Highly recommended and such an improvement over violin pickups.

I have used this microphone for years and it sounds amazing plug and play.

Only negatives:
The nano XLR cable (technically called a Microdot Cable) is susceptible to braking with heavy usage. After a year of nearly everyday use, I broke the original cable.

The microphone is susceptible to feedback when situated on a small stage with a monitor very close etc. This can be avoided easily but it is more of an issue than with your standard SM58 etc. This is to be expected with a microphone of this type and it is rarely an issue.

This is a fantastic and versatile mic with relatively flat frequency response and excellent sound quality. I am using it both for my solo violin performances and my pieces involving live instruments and electronics. Highly recommended.

Perfect mandolin mic
Jason D 26.08.2023
Attaches to and picks up my mandolin perfectly. Sound is transparent and easy to eq. Compared to the pencil condensers I've been using, this mic provides a consistently exceptional tone regardless of movement without all the bleed. The cable seems delicate, but I'm not rough on my gear.

Excellent, but delicate mic.
JRHoo 29.09.2024
The sound from this little guy is amazing, no complaints there. It seems like such a delicate, fragile mic though. I'm always nervous that it's going to get damaged on a gig. The signal wire is so thin, it seems like it could easily be damaged by a crease, a chair leg being sat on top of it, even foot traffic. I try to communicate how fragile it seems to the talent, and have yet to have a problem, but it does cause me concern. Again, I've not have a problem with it, so I can't take away any stars. If you're looking for great sound in a small, unobtrusive, light-as-a-feather mic that you don't plan to use in a rough way, then this is definitely the mic for you. If you, however, tend to be rougher with your gear, you might want to look at other options.
