Great sounds, the interface will turn off some people.
Benjamin850 16.02.2022
The synth sounds in this unit are good; if you are looking for something near the sounds of a Juno, this box can get extremely close with its voicing structure. No stereo output or Chorus effect onboard, that would have made this even closer to the classic Juno sound.

A few gripes:
First, the interface is awkward, which is forgivable considering the form factor, but should still be acknowledged. It's easy to lose track of what each slider will control whilst the various submenu modes are engaged, and the method of entering submenus is unfamiliar so there is a learning curve.

Second, the only option to power this synth is with a USB cable. In my home studio setup with many other small synths and devices, adding another USB-powered device often means other devices will pick up ground noise when a new device is added. No, I'm not plugging the USB into my computer to power the synth, just using a USB power delivery device.. but then sending analog audio out from this device into an interface or mixer on the same electrical power circuit means that the noise dumped from one device to ground can get picked up by another device and fed back into the audio path.

Third: Tuning stability could be a bit better. I've kept this synth in the same indoor space for a few weeks and I've had to calibrate the oscillators a few times to keep them in tune. Not really a problem, as VCOs do that and that's part of their appeal, but worth a mention. The audible calibration sounds cool while it's happening, though.

Fourth: The only onboard effect is a digital reverb that just does not sound good to me. Very metallic and granular, I just always turn it off since it doesn't lend itself to the type of sound I'm using this for. An onboard stereo chorus would have been a better inclusion in my opinion.

Sounds great out of the box.
Kev 0 12.01.2022
-Menu system is pretty easy to get the hang of, doesn't feel slow (definitely not any slower than extensive menu diving with a screen).

-The reverb is mono, but if you like spring reverbs it sounds nice. I prefer it to the ridiculous shimmer reverbs that are popular. Obviously it's still digital, but this one has character!

-The shift functions are a little annoying, but I can understand why they brought the functions they did to the front panel. To put it in perspective: it's a lot less hassle to hold shift and move a slider (for lets say the high pass filter) than it would be to go into a menu, then a sub menu to change it.

If you like Japanese sounding polys, this is for you. Looking forward to diving deeper with this one.

The most versatile analog poly synth in relation to the price and form factor. Killer product really!!! . The shift function is slightly annoying but hey look what's inside this little box

Solid little Poly
Eebs 27.12.2022
The Nymhes is a great little poly synth with a solid analog sound. It takes a little to get used to the layout and workflow but it all makes sense real quick and you'll be having analog fun in no time.

Lovin' it!
browndwarf 15.01.2024
This little guy packs a punch! It is capable of a wide range of sounds despite its 1 VCO architecture. It has a grittiness that Dreadbox is so adept at creating. As many have already remarked, its user interface takes some getting used to. It would be really great if it can include even a tiny screen to show some feedback but I understand the design philosophy of Dreadbox creating this tiny device. I use an external MIDI controller/sequencer to map its alternate slider functions, which I think helps a great deal. At this price offered by Thomann, it was a no brainer for me, replacing my JU-06a which has only 4 voice and a much narrower palette of sounds.

One of my all-time favorite synths (and I've used them all)
Dreadbox-Appreciator 09.11.2024
I absolutely love the sound of this synth and it has a very surprising amount of sound shaping possibilities. I've seen other reviews where people dislike the reverb. I think the reverb is charming, and if you don't like it you can just not use it! The interface is unusual and kind of hard to get used to, but it is *much* easier to navigate with the help of an oversynth overlay. I also love the convenient small size and weight. It's perfect for making music at the park, fits in a bag easily, etc. Overall I really adore this box.

Character is everything!
Fluxburger 08.03.2023
You can have synths that do everything under the sun, but it's the character of the sound that makes them interesting, charming and inspirational. This synth is full of character and some really unusual routings give you a sound that you don't get from other synths of similar architecture. Worth every penny. I only wish it was slightly less minimalistic.

Vo
It's wonderful - 6 voice polyphony in a small form factor
V of Londor 29.05.2023
It's wonderful - it's extremely small, but it has 6 voice polyphony and easy access to controls at a relatively low price.

Honestly, after watching a lot of videos I was a bit scared that it might be hard to control due to not having a screen and still having presets, but honestly, after reading through the (short) manual it feels intuitive to do everything - set modulation destinations, load/save presets etc.

Furthermore, having both a low pass and high pass filter at the same time makes sound shaping flexible.

Lastly, it can achieve lots of different sounds, but I enjoy really wide pads most, but that does require quite a wide midi keyboard for playing them live.

Would buy another one
Danyok 23.12.2023
Ground loop noise When connected to the pc. Same as Typhon. I would connect the through 5din but in this case you can’t use it with Cherry Audio Voltage modular plugin by Tim Shoebridge. Only usb connection is available for that. And that vst is the best way to use the synth. I wish Dreadbox did some fixing thing for the ground loop effect or show us a working solution.

Great little poly synth
Dson 29.06.2022
I've had mine for several months now and I really enjoy it, no complaints at all. It does require some menu diving but I got used to the UI fairly quickly. I love the sounds it makes. Seems well built and is very mobile!
