Tiny footprint, massive sound.
mononism 26.02.2024
If you can get past the interface which uses sliders in place of pots and the tiny screen, both of which aren't really an issue, then this thing will blow your socks off! It's very deep in application and you can spend ages just noodling around with it.
+ USB powered! Tiny footprint, massive sound, tough build quality, great effects (use it as a send effect for extra fun).
- sequencing can be a pain, maybe something else.

H
OK sound, fiddly interface
Hrks 11.11.2021
Had it for about 6 months now. Lacks more hands on control. Expected more punch in the sound. Value is good for a mono synth. Drone and lead/bass sounds are really good. Moog? No. Oberheim? No. A lot of tweaking? Yes. Unique? Yes. Style. Yes Value? Not for me.
I think there's way better things on the market for less or equal money, especially now the prices have gone up. Quality seems good for now.

Edit: Had it for almost 10 months now. Tought i was wrong maybe in regards the sound and UI, and overall feel. I wasn't. Sound gets weak when crowded with those 32 bit effects. It sounds thinny. The whole sound is more fragile in the end.

There are a few really warm analogue sounds in this one, others are cold/agressive/etheral one's. Wich is ok if you like it. I can do that with a digital synth also. It's still very durable tho and the synthwavey design is very nice! The knobs are very sturdy and the chasis feels unbrakeable.

Edit 2: I've sold it in the end and got myself a Roland Jd-Xi and i'm quite happy with it.

Good for what it costs, but let's put it in perspective
Jon England 09.11.2022
On the positive side, it's good for what it is, which is a small, sturdy, well built monosynth that's good for ambient and drone sounds in particular, and is a good sounding synth all around. The effects are OK too, not bad, although not comparable to say the Novation Peak. I think Dreadbox need to be acknowledged and praised for making a good monosynth at an accessible price - similar in form factor to, but way cheaper than, say a Moog Minitaur.

Negatives? The screen is tiny to the point of being unusable live. Or indeed even in daylight if your eyesight's Likewise, it's not a DX7, but as someone else pointed out, it has a fiddly interface - the sliders in particular are too small and fiddly for anyone without tiny hands. Also, comparing the Typhon to the Iridium, Argon8M or Wavestate isn't realistic in terms of both the much wider functionality and hands on, direct controls those synths provide - it simply does not compare to them (and arguably, they don't compare with each other, anyway). To claim that is to not know those other synths in any depth, and they are hugely capable - but progressively more costly too, to put it in perspective.

Overall, a good sounding well built synth that does what it does well. Personally though, I'll be selling mine because of the tiny sliders and impractical display.

Amazing analogue desktop by Dreadbox!
Asterios 11.02.2022
I'm glad about this amazing & affordable new analogue monophonic desktop synth from Greek Dreadbox (I'm Greek, too!)

Dreadbox managed to fit so many things into a mini desktop synth, like
32 Step note sequencer, 12 wonderful digital DSP effects, etc!
It even has a 128 x 64 display where you can manage 256 Presets with import-export function and with the latest firmware update (v.4.1) you can even also have midi & audio over usb!

In a few words, Typhon is an amazing little synth with BIG sound!
Very well done Dreadbox!
Highly recommended! :-)

Perfect Synth, massive sound
Alie_O 25.01.2021
The Typhon Dreadbox is a small Analog Synth that comes with gigantic rough and diverse analog sounds to get lost in for hours. Overall the small but sturdy metal box has a simple layout and comfy yet touch-sensitive knobs, buttons and sliders that take you through any adjustments necessary without the need to spend too much time on reading the manual. The first look makes it feel like superb quality for a really amazing price and lots of fun with jamming.

It takes a bit of time to get used to the selection of the waveshapes for the two Oscillators but apart from that, the Typhon is quite more intuitive than expected. Even without using the very entertaining Manual, it is rather easy to find one?s way around the menu, sequencer, the different modulators and effects.

The programming of the sequencer takes a little while to get used to and some deep-menu-diving is necessary but it is still absolutely doable - and afterall the Typhon houses a 32-Step-Sequencer so that leaves a lot of room for inspiration. It might be useful to freshen up music theory knowledge as programming the different steps works by selecting the Notes of the Scale and mapping those to each desired step.

To dig really deep I will need more time but I am already sure that whatever con?s may arise - the enormous sound will most likely make up for it!

Cheap alternative to expensive gear
1 BPM 26.07.2021
Afer one week of enjoying this little synth, I ordered a second one! I have been trying and returning/reselling various synths such as Iridium, Argon8M, Wavestate and finally I came across this el cheapo Typhon, in search for an ambient space soundscape drone thingie. O M G yes this tiny box surprised the bleep out of me. No matter what patch I selected, just fiddling with the Mods and Fxs gets me heavenly drones or ambient pads. The Fxs act like Mods, better than the Dreadbox NYX does. I tried expensive wavesynths but this Typhon beats them hands down. Yeahyeah no full fledged wavetable scan, but you can LFO through the wave forms ever so lovely. Very intuitive user interface BTW. The only negative minus ugly bad thing is the super tiny small screen that needs a magnifying glass or strong readers glasses to read those microscopic characters and symbols. So 1 star less for a couple of details. 5 Stars total because it is a huge fun synth all the way, and because I find it so good that I ordered a second one.

Vo
Great sound and features at a relatively low price
V of Londor 03.11.2022
The Typhon is an insanely versatile monosynth that sounds rich.
What brings it even further are the great effects and modulation options.
However, what really made it stand out for me are the multifunctional knobs: the filter and amp time knobs increase or decrease all of the ADSR parts relatively to what you have set as initial values, which creates unique possibilities during live performances where you can shift the sounds drastically, but intuitively during live performances. Similar functions are packed into the tune knob, which goes into detune territory when you are close to unison or octave up/down, but goes into clear semitones when you are further away, which makes it easy to create precise intervals even during a live performance.

It’s just a crazy thing, although it’s a little difficult to learn and you have to delve into the menu, but it’s completely worth it with the possibilities of this synthesizer, which are almost endless. Unimaginable sounds, great presets. One of my favorite synthesizers when I want to find special sounds.

A little gem
N4505 08.02.2023
Amazing and complete little analog synth.

I love that besides the perfect analog sound and extensive modulation options, it also includes a sequencer and some awesome effects that can also be modulated.

The only minor complaint is that it's usb powered only and some ground noise is very likely to occur, but there are many workarounds for this.
