Deeply Delicious Drive
AltaRic 08.07.2017
If ever there was an easily accessible secret sauce to give your bass or guitar an edge, this is it. Not only is this incarnation of the pedal provide a DI, but it can also be powered by a standard (Boss style) power supply - which certainly makes the unit much more practical on larger pedal boards.

Although perhaps voiced primarily for bass, I find that subtle settings make guitars come alive with a rich harmonic presence which is felt rather than heard. Of course, the drive can provide full on distortion if need be - so much do that this is the second of these pedals I own and I use them for different applications. My original Valve drive didn't have the DI and used a different power supply, but the rest of the unit functions the same.

As a guitarist who lives to run a very clean basic tone using a Roland Jazz Chorus amp, the Valve drive is an exceptional addition at the preamp stage to add the magic harmonic sauce. For basses, well you need look no further than this unit. Just play a deep dub reggae bass line with this unit giving you a mild to moderate beautifully valve compressed overdrive and you'll really not want to stop playing.

For a unit of this quality, despite its size in the era of nano pedals, I can find no cons whatsoever.

I can't recommend this highly enough.

My favourite low gain overdrive
Tauzieher 13.02.2014
Don't get me wrong, it has quite some gain on tap and I've used it as a high(er) gain overdrive in the past. But the low gain area is where it really shines.

With a 3 band eq, volume, gain, 2 channels, a -8dB pad switch and a switch that turns the "Active" footswitch from bypass to mute, it actually has many more features than you'll usually find on drives. This probably stems from the fact that EBS also advertises the ValveDrive as a tube preamp, not just as a tube overdrive.
The EQ section takes a little getting used to - but it is very well explained in the manual, so don't worry. The pedal is also huge and heavy as hell, and that's where the 4 stars for handling come from. The sound, however, is well worth the effort.

As for sound, the 2 channels are very different in nature. The modern channel, indicated by a red LED above the "Vintage" footswitch, produces a very focused, punchy sound that retains clarity even on higher gain settings. Upon pressing the "Vintage" switch, the LED turns to a warm yellow - welcome to the vintage channel. This one produces a much more "overdriven tube amp"-like sound: dirtier, grittier, crunchy and a lot less focused/punchy. Unfortunately, it loses volume (or at least perceived volume) on higher gain settings when compared to the modern channel. On low gain settings (im running the gain at about 9 o'clock) they're very well balanced, however, and you can really use both channels as independent sounds. Also, I've never heard a pedal do low gain on bass better than the ValveDrive.

The quality is great as always, built like a tank, just the right amount of resistance when turning the pots and quality switches. It also looks cool as hell with the chrome tube cage and the orange lighting inside it.

T
Best tube effect pedal
TomB. 16.02.2014
I bought the Valve drive in 2009 and I am still very happy with it. First I wanted to have an effect pedal that makes my sound warmer and can do a warm distortion, but I didn’t want to spend more than 150 Euro. So I went to Thomann and tested several effect pedals. After I played some I was advised to test the Valve Drive, but I thought it was too expensive. As I tested it I did realize that it’s good value. Though it was so expensive I had to buy it, because it was that good! Together with my LeFay Bass and my Glockenklang Soul Amp it makes the best sound I can imagine!

MM
Genuine valve sound from a pedal
Malcolm M. 21.05.2013
Perfect if you just want to add a bit of valve warmth to a solid- state amp. I often find myself using a modern light weight rig these days, but it can sound a bit hi-fi or sterile. This pedal solved the problem, without me having to carry the monster valve amps again.
I've been getting complimentary remarks about the sound of my rig since I got this.
Almost never do a gig or studio session without it now.

Versatile DI
Anonymous 28.02.2017
This is a highly versatile DI which it can be used as an overdrive or a tube preamp emulating vintage tube bass amps.

In general, really nice but a bit overpriced so make sure it suits you first!
