So you take this lil spring and drop it in before you attach the trem arm. Some Fender models come with these when new. You don't need these but the added srping gives the arm some resistance and it doesn't feel as wonky while whammying. Spring does not revert to it's original length after arm is removed so at some point you have to change the spring.. that is if you can get the old one out that's mangled in there.

I must have gotten a bad package of these; the temper in the steel is terrible. Once compressed, they stay compressed, and do NOT spring back into place.
