Powerful bass for pro studios

The Genelec 7040 APM is a subwoofer that will bring powerful and transparent bass to every studio's control room. Its low-distortion sound is characterised by its clean low frequencies, which begin at 30Hz. The rear panel is fitted with analogue connectors for near-field monitors, enabling an effective stereo setup. The Genelec 7040 APM's integrated bass management technology filters out any low bass frequencies from the channels connected to it, reproducing them through the unit itself. In addition, settings for sound enhancement can be made directly on the subwoofer using its internal DIP switches, enabling a perfect setup in any control room. All these features make this subwoofer a great professional solution for modern stereo production.

Ideal configuration for every space

The Genelec 7040 APM is equipped with a 6.5" woofer, which is housed in Genelec's specially developed Laminar Spiral Enclosure (LSE) bass reflex cabinet. It reproduces frequencies from 30 to 90Hz with a roll-off of -6dB, and is driven by a Class D amplifier with an output of 50W. An electronic system stops the driver from overloading and short-circuiting, as well as protecting the amplifier from thermal overload. The 7040 APM can achieve a maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 100dB and comes fitted with two analogue inputs and outputs in XLR format on the rear, which can be used to connect two near-field monitors, ideally to be set up in a stereo triangle for a perfect sweet spot. The DIP switches can be used to directly adjust the slope, phase, signal gain, and other settings.

Precise and transparent bass

The Genelec 7040 APM was designed for professional studio operators who are looking for an effective, production-standard subwoofer, as the unit complements the Genelec 8010 AP or Genelec 8020 near-field monitors perfectly. Genelec's proprietary bass reflex cabinet lets the 7040 APM achieve high sound pressure levels, resulting in a powerful low end while ensuring precise and transparent bass notes. In addition, Intelligent Signal Sensing can be activated via a DIP switch, meaning that the unit has an economical power consumption of just 0.5W in standby mode. The 11.3kg (24.9lb) subwoofer is also easy to transport thanks to its elegant, open-frame design, while the two struts can serve as carrying handles.

About Genelec

Genelec was founded in 1976 by Ilpo Martikainen. It grew from a family business into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of professional studio and broadcasting loudspeakers. To this day, Genelec’s loudspeakers are manufactured exclusively in Finland. Genelec offers performance-oriented, neutral-sounding loudspeakers and subwoofer systems for audio professionals and sound enthusiasts, and a combination of innovative technology and design ensure that the range of products is continuously improving. The company is committed to sustainable development and environmental awareness. In 2018, Genelec was awarded the Pro Sound "Company of the Year" award. Genelec speakers are favourites of such recording industry veterans as Obie O'Brien, Michael Carnes, and David Reitzas, as well as of producers like Hardwell, Keith Ross, and Vini Vici.

Careful placement for peak performance

As low-frequency vibrations have a major impact on the sound of a room, the subwoofer should be positioned carefully in the user's sound control room. The distance between the driver of the Genelec 7040 APM and the front wall should be less than 0.6 metres (under 2'), with an ideal space of at least 10 metres (over 32') in front of the driver. Carpeting under the subwoofer will help to absorb vibrations in the room. The DIP switches should be used to set a suitable roll-off in relation to the distance from the wall; if the Genelec 7040 APM is being used free-standing, a value of -6dB should be set. If the linearity of the frequency response needs further improvement, users are advised to move the subwoofer slightly to the right or left.

Fantastic sound at reasonable price!

On various forums I read that Genelec sub woofers are over priced and that similar or better results can be achieved with some sub woofers from hi-fi audio market, at a lower cost. I decided to take the risk and try my luck with 7040. This was my sixth sub woofer and with previous five I was never able to achieve proper balance between the main speakers and the sub. There was always some boominess of the lower end and the bass was either bloated or not present. My room is not treated and the only spot the sub could go was right in the corner, next to the right main speaker. I followed Genelec's recommendations and adjusted the dip switches for the in corner position and the magic happened! I had to play with the volume a bit but it was a different, well balanced kind of a sound!
I was a bit skeptical about letting the sub restrict what goes to the main speakers (nothing under 85 Hz) but that actually improved the sound of the main speakers. They sound more open and relaxed. Another benefit is that bass is present regardless of the sound level you are listening at. Sub is not affecting the sound level sent to it, so you don't have to play it loud in order to activate the sub. Some people may not find the specs too impressive but I was not looking for -3 dB at 20 Hz since I am living in an apartment building and that would not be the most pleasant experience for the people living above and below us. The sound I am getting is very clear and musical. I am very happy with my choice!
If there is an area of criticism, the sub does not have any protective feet at the bottom of it so it will be scratched if placed on the hard surface.

Great sub!
sosorio 31.12.2019
I really thought that this sub will blow out my room, cause i never had a sub woofer and my mixing room is medium size, but it worked out. Now i can feel the sub in my room, which is perfect for mixing low end, i just realize how bad i was mixing the low end, or how i wasnt using the whole spectrum. Im very exting to heat my new productions using this sub, its a 6 inch so its very useful for medium size rooms, now i can mix propertly!. I reccomend using this with the genelec near field monitors.

A
Surprisingly powerful
Anonymous 24.02.2017
As expected this sub works excellently with 8010A and 8020B.
Nicely controlled, very clean, well balanced and more powerful than its specs would suggest.
The super broad range of sensitivity control and internal high pass filter mean it works well with all manner of non-Genelec powered monitors. Just order the correct cables because connections are XLR only.
I was surprised how much the sub adds with somewhat larger speakers such as Mackie HR624Mk2, provided you accept the sub's power limitations.
Auto-power off/on works well.
DIP-based adjustments are adequate and easy to configure, but not something you'd want to fiddle with every day because of their location.
The setup is used for critical listening to music rather than movie/nightclub use. This sub won't loosen your teeth, but provides precision bass reinforcement for smaller boxed speakers.

Bigger than you think.
DigiPete 01.12.2021
I had Genelec's 8010's for years, and it was a nice crisp sounding travelling setup. As long as you didn't push them too hard and your material not too bass heavy.
Then I got the 7040 sub with my second set of 8010's, and boy a difference.
Punchy, yet precise bass, and SPL in spades from the 8010's , still crisp clean.
I now often prefer this setup for near/mid field over my massive Genelec 8260's. I actually had to tame the room modes in SW, that's how low the 7040 reach IRL.
Recommended if you need precision over SPL down to 30hz in a smaller room.
