I was tired of ringy and boomy snare drums, I just wanted that certain snap and crack with minimum muffling. I've had a Ludwig Supraphonic LM402 that I just could not get along with, way too much ring and mid-frequency boom for me. My Benny Greg Sonor Sig gets pretty close to that "thwack" I need. Not quite there, though.
This bronze drum seems to resonate at a lower frequency or something, but it just sounded very nice from the get-go. I has a hum without muffling, but it seems lower. This is actually the first snare ever that I love to use without muffling, I love that low note that it gives.
The wide snares give this one some real crack. I hope them snares last a long while. Overall this is a beautiful drum and very well made, high points from me. I've mostly used it in a medium or high tuning. Works great.
