Hours of fun
Dylosh 04.03.2022
You will need to invest a bit of time to learn the interface and the button combos. Once you have all that underway you can actually perform with this little device.
I bought it as a very high class metronome basically. I thought I'll programs some beats and then play over them to practice. Now I see there is a live performance factor to this that you don't want to out it down and pick up a bass or anything. It will keep you entertained for hours sculpting sounds and rhythms.
Build is great. People are complaining about the small interface. And the micro adjustments being a problem but the micro increments are what gives it that insane sound when sweeping the pitch from low to high while also increasing the release of on the the parameters will give you other worldly sounds that if the knobs were clickable or had less micro increments you would miss out on.

I could talk for hours about this but for 130 euro or there or there abouts it's well worth buying and seeing for yourself!

Best volca to have
podsky 25.11.2020
Everyone have his/hers favourite volca, for me it is the Drum.

1. You can use it as a standard drum machine for a simple setup

or

2. You can fiddle with every sound (there are 6 parts), in many, many ways. If you know even a bit about analog synthesis - this will be a fun process. After you will arrive at the set of 6, you can than sequence them and save your preset. And than - you can chain patterns!

The waveguide effect is something interesting. Not very easy to use, it can be a bit unpredictable at the beggining, but - well - you can arrive at interesting delay/repeat/echo effects with it.

Great drum machine, but a little bit flimsy.
Crane 11.06.2021
The volca drum offers a lot of possibilities and is one of the few from the series that has such depth in the synth engine. If you get yourself familiar with the machine and utilise its limitations effectively, it can do drum, synth and effect sounds pretty well. The sequencer is good and perhaps one of the better from the series. With a little practice, you can perform just fine with it.

What bothers me about the volca drum is programming sounds. There's a lot of menu diving involved and in some cases you'll have to dial in settings with one knob while looking at its tiny OLED screen. The buttons lack a pleasing "click" that makes fine-tuning specific values difficult.

If you don't mind taking time for programming drums and you're fine with working with a tiny (but perfectly legible) screen, the volca drum is a great little machine for what it offers. It's just not that accessible and immediate as other volcas in the range.

A solid first analog synth.
Tony_p 24.02.2022
One of the first three original volcas and maybe the best one; the three paraphonic oscillators pack such wonderful sounds with great range for experimentation and controls are solid. My only gripe is with the sequencer , it could use more that just the 16 steps but then again at in this price range anything more than the engine could be seen as an added extra. Solid build, would recomend to anyone as an intro to dawless and as a nice piece of hardware for experimenting on the go.

Versatile and great sounding
6000 10.12.2020
Volca Drum is just a fantastic creative tool. Don't expect classic 808 sounds (even though it can do them as well) but much more versatile sound palette - it offers almost endless amount of new, original sounds that you can come up with. Combine it with your outboard or plugin FX of choice and it's even more great.

Too much machine?
Zanzara 13.01.2024
The Volca Drum is a lot of power in a little box, ridiculous sound-shaping capabilities so that it can certainly be used as a groovebox rather than simply a drum machine.

But getting the sounds you want takes time and patience, with one parameter knob doing a lot of the work.

If you've got time to spend, maybe on a long trip or while waiting for something, it's a great way to entertain yourself. And if you're new to synths, it's a good educational tool, learning how things work to create specific sounds.

But I take a star away for the fact that it's not usually 'instant fun' for me, it takes a little while before the 'chore' element passes. Maybe I'm too impatient!

OM
Great little machine!
Old Murray 11.08.2020
I saw a review on youtube and one of the users was complaining that he "couldn't get a usable sound out of it".
Well, that seems more like he's the one at fault, and certainly not this little wonder.
Its elasticity of sound is amazing. Not so complicated to use once you go around a couple of times through the parameters.
Active step is a wonder for polyrhythms and the ability to change to sound concepts are a big plus.
Overall really pleased with the Volca Drum.

Love it
Anonymous 12.03.2023
I love the synthesis, you can make a wide range of really interesting percussive (and tonal!) sounds with it.

It takes a bit of an effort to learn, but it's a fun process (at least it was for me). I'm very happy I went with the Volca Drum, instead of using a drum machine with limited, pre-defined sounds.

The unit is small, so I fear for it being fragile, but build quality seems quite good, so I hope it will last.

M
Impressive little Perc Synth
MMMMMMMMMMMMM 05.06.2020
Amazing sound machine for the price! I cannot tell you how happy I am with this thing.
Pros
- good features, cannot complain for the price
- sound is also quite good! also nothing to complain!

Cons
- it is not as intuitive as others, but a search in youtube helps
- the 9v adaptor needed is neither included nor of standard size as guitar pedals (i am a guitarist :)), so I need to buy another adaptor instad of using a multiblock that I already have...

all in all, great buy and would def. buy again!

A lot of bang for your buck..
Dylan L 08.06.2022
Undoubtedly a huge amount of versatility, and amazing spectrum of options for percussive sound design.
But,, I think the knobs could be better, I realise the Volca form factor is limiting, but there is space on the unit to use chunkier, more accurate dial knobs
