Ludwig 13"x07" Universal Brass Snare

For long I had been trying to get a high tuning from 14" snares but trying the same thing on this 13" was effortless. The snare now can be pitched higher without choking. These dimensions and Ludwig craftsmanship generate an easy-to-tune, versatile and sensitive snare with a wide tuning spectrum and a lot of 'crack'.
I particularly like the signature Ludwig brass timbre. It really helps a lot in the projection while overtones stay controlled.
The stock drumheads unfortunately need to be replaced immediately as they are of low quality. Mind also that it comes with 20 strand snare wires which generate an enhanced white noise buzz in comparison to snares with less strand wires.
Overall however and given the price tag I cannot complain about this snare. Again it is very versatile and once you change the drumheads it really shines. It easily competes with significantly more expensive options.

Der erste Eindruck der Snare ist leider nicht optimal: der Karton ist dick mit "Taiwan" beschriftet, die Snare darin nur in einer Plastikfolie verpackt (kein Füllmaterial/Kantenschutz, um die Snare beim Transport zu schützen), es liegt kein Stimmschlüssel bei.
Bei den "Black Magic" Vorgängern wäre das m.E. noch vertretbar, die Universal Serie liegt ja allerdings mit einem Preis vom 500€ (für die Versionen mit Black Nickel Hardware und Gußspannreifen) nicht mehr im Einsteigerbereich.

Klanglich ist die Snare durchaus gut, exakt was man sich bei einer 13x7 Messing Snare erwartet.

Das große Manko ist aber die Verarbeitungsqualität, hauptsächlich der Böckchen-Gewinde. Bei der 13er Snare mit 8 Lugs war jedes(!) Gewinde minimal anders geschnitten, was dazu führt, dass 2 Schrauben fast schon schwer reinzudrehen waren, während zwei extrem leicht gingen (so leicht, dass sie sich nach kurzer Spieldauer gelöst hatten) und der Rest irgendwo dazwischen lag.
Resultat davon ist, dass die Snare unglaublich schwer einheitlich stimmbar ist und nach kürzester Zeit die Stimmung wieder (komplett verliert).

Dies ist aus meiner Sicht bei einer Snare dieser Preisklasse nicht akzeptabel.

Got this thing for like 2 months now and i gotta say its like Pearl Joey Jordison on steroids. Beautiful resonance of the brass shell combined with gunshot crack from the diecast hoop will give you the exact snare sound you desire. Plus the sensitivity and super simple mechanics of the throw off will ensure perfect wire tension and sensitivity. Tuning is a question of a few minutes. From heavy metal to jazz, this snare will serve extremely well. For the quality and sound you get, this drums price is ridiculously low.
