This ukulele is more of a toy than a real instrument, but if we take into account the price, it is a fair value for money if you want to see and try out playing ukulele for the 1st time. It did exactly that for me - after buying this ukulele, i found out that playing ukulele is fun and now I want to buy a better ukulele. the thing with this ukulele is that it hardly stays in tune and it is even hard to get it into tune. so it does not sound that good. but it is okay for the price and okay if you are just wanting to try out playing ukulele or want a toy instrument for some kid.

Can't stop smiling, quality instrument
Dan P. 02.06.2015
I own eight acoustic guitars, and one irish bouzouki of varying quality - all good to irreplaceable - but this is my first ukelele, bought for a three-year old. I can't find a fault with it.
Sound - being unfamiliar with what a really expensive ukelele sounds like it's difficult to say - it sounds fine to me
Intonation and tuning - not only is the intonation good all the way up the neck, the tuners seem to be of better quality than the grovers on my Taylor 810CE, the (refit) waverley butterbeans on my '64 Gibson Country Western, etc., etc.
Build quality, finish, design - the design just says 'pick me up' - the paint job and joints are good and everything is well-finished.

Make you smile.
Cotton Head 15.07.2014
As part of my campaign to give a present of a Ukulele to every baby born to family or friends I thought that the Mahalo Smiley Ukulele was a good contender as it would make an excellent decoration in any child’s room while they were growing up enough to learn to play it.

I have tried one or two other low cost Ukuleles in the past and they have needed a bit of setting up, bridge adjustment etc.

The Mahalo Smiley Ukulele was great straight out of the box, no adjustment needed, nice tone easy to play, tuners work well. Only needed the strings to be stretched for a bit.

Nice little Uke for a beginner, it brings a smile to the face just looking at it and a great deal of joy when playing it.

SO
Looks good, sounds bad.
Steven O. 10.01.2017
This is a novelty instrument. It looks great, but it's a case of style over substance. The sound is very poor. The build quality is great however. My two year old has given it a fair few knocks and it's holding up pretty well. There is better ukuleles out there for the money. I'd stay clear of the smiley face.

Doesn't hold tune
JohnnyGomes 29.05.2015
I don't know if it's only mine or if it's the strings (I didn't try to put new ones yet), but this thing doesn't stay in tune for more than 3 minutes! At the beginning I thought it was because I had just bought it. But it didn't get better after many days.

But I just bought it for fun and it's cheap, so... No big deal.

T
Best gift and may I add, a beautiful ukelele sound as well
TonyViolin 15.11.2023
I grew up with this model ukelele, actually my first foray into musical instruments when I was gifted this back 10 years ago. Its a cute and beautiful little ukelele, and in my honest opinion better sounding then a lot of 100 dollar ukes out there. Yes this is slightly shorter than modern soprano ukeleles but I honestly loved it as a kid, and because of it I eventually ventured into other stringed instruments such as the
classical guitar, upright bass and violin. In fact I even became an advanced youth violinist in my teen years and I owe part of that credit to the musical delight this little uke gave me. I came to Thomann to order two of these now as a gift for my little nieces, arrived swiftly and well packed, and they absolutely adore them.

Even my 1.5 year son is "playing" ukulele ;)
I both this only for fun, but still usable when you need to take an instrument.
