Meinl made a line of very interesting small percussion instruments and this is definitely one of them though it is one of the more esoteric kinds. The sound is very subtle and you can produce a wah wah effect by opening or squeezing the bowl side of the shaker. It has it's own characteristics this way.

Shape your shaking

This is a great evolution of the simple shaker. The base sound is nice and clear and it fits nicely in the hand. But what makes this shaker different is the "tone shell" on the bottom. Cup it in your other hand, and by moving it around you can change the tonality of the shake. This allows lots of great possibilities for accents and flavours. A brilliant idea - my favourite shaker, and it looks a bit sci-fi too.
