MXR Supercomp M132

106

Stomp Box

For all types of devices there are some classics which are used repeatedly over decades and over the time reach genuine cult status. When it comes to compressors for guitar and bass, one effect is necessary to be mentioned, and that is clearly the MXR Dynacomp. As often as this device has been used in professional and already legendary recordings, it is actually unnecessary to say more. The Supercomp goes a step further. While the Dynacomp only uses two knobs, the new Supercomp uses another knob!

The sensitivity knob is used to set the compression threshold, the final volume is then determined with the output knob. The attack knob determines the time at which the signal is compressed. The Supercomp simply does not need more knobs, because everything is set so guitars and basses sound compact and crisp. Of course you can also extend the sustain significantly with more extreme settings; what else do you need?

  • Compressor
  • Knobs for output, attack level and sensitivity (ratio)
  • Bypass mode
  • Indicator LED
  • Power supply via 9V battery (not included) or optional AC adapter

Very robust pedal. I've owned it for 2 years now and gigged with it extensively in that time. Has held up very well and looks like it's going to last. Unlike most pedals the paint has seemed to stay fairly in tact despite being consistently weathered and beaten by the bottom of my foot.

Sound wise it is what you would expect from a standard compressor except it includes an attack knob which allows you to accommodate for whether your guitar has low or high output pickups. I find this especially useful as I often switch between a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson Les Paul depending on the gig.

One criticism I have of this pedal is it sometimes pops when engaged or disengaged. Perhaps it is just my particular model but I find if I just press it a few times prior to performing with the amp off it gets rid of this issue. However, during performances I tend to use very light compression and not go near it anyway so it's not a huge issue for me.

At first it might take a while to get use to the attack knob but overall I think for the price this compressor is a serious deal. Would highly recommend!

Mostly great

I chose this instead of the DynaComp because I wanted the Attack control.

It mostly does what a compressor should and it cover all of the non-insane compression range.

The only gripe I have with it is that the first attack when you start playing is always quite loud (since it has no reference to know it should cut it), but that's not a big deal at all.

It's incredibly solid and has not caused any trouble in 7 years.

Attacky and not that transparent
Anonymous 21.10.2014
I've tried both this pedal and it's little red brother the DynaComp, and I must say I actually prefer the Dynacomp.

It's much easier to get a good sound from, the Supercomp is really attacky and hard to set to a transparent setting. But in the end I think it runs up to what you are after, cause it's a great pedal, no doubt about that. Just not the type of compressor I was after.

Quality-wise there isn't much to say, it's a MXR pedal - they always deliver great quality!

It is one of the best compressor pedals for recording the guitar track. And then working with this guitar track in DAW.
