NS Design NXT5a-DB-SB Double Bass

As a double bass player, I,ve tried to find an instrument, which could coexist with upright and create new sound possibilities. I've chosen 5-string version and put high C instead low B. All solo parts, improvisations (arco and pizzicato) in high register sound fantastic - much better than I expected. Bass is well-made, solid, tuneful and playable. I could recommend it for everyone, who likes all "hybrid" options. One can easy operate along whole fingerboard (soft and silky smooth) and construct complex chords with harmonics and open strings (great, looong sustain). But - definitely - this smart and nice instrument can't replace upright bass. No solid punch, deep response and specific, acoustic tension. It was not made for it, but - somehow - few of bassist try to use it as a "second" upright. Not my way.

I replaced original strings with Flexocores and high c Thomastik, and it works well.

i have been dreaming about getting this bass for years and now i finally have it. and i gotta say that it is even better than i remember when i played one some years back. i had looked at and tried some other electric upright basses but this is the best for me. the feel and tone are perfect for what i want it for.

as for play-ability i am surprised how easy it has been to begin to get to grips with it seeing as i am new to upright bass. i guess being used to fretless bass and various string counts the move to an eub is a little easier.

the build quality is excellent, the stand supplied is quick to set up and easy to use. the case is neat with compartments for the bass, the stand, the bow and a pocket for rosin, cables or what ever you need. and all this is easy carried with the shoulder strap.

it came very securely packaged and apart from a very slight tune and popping it on the stand i was ready to go.

and as ever the service from thomann was great.

so if you are thinking about buying one of these NS Design basses go for it you wont be disappointed.
