Rotosound Black Nylon strings
Loosecorp 04.04.2018
Very good product as all the set of strings that I always purchase with Rotosound.

I wanted to tried black strings on my bass and tried various types but was never happy with one.

This strings feels incredibly nice if you like flat wound strings.
The tone is very round and low and the look is obviously very cool.
I tried it on my Fender Jazz Bass but the strings were too thick and wouldn't fit the little holes at the top of the neck.
I then tried them on my acoustic bass and it sounded quite amazing, similar to a double bass, which is really was I was looking for.

Hope you found this helpful.

What a sound!

I never tried taped strings on my J-Bass, that's like a revelation to me! the tone is amazing, sounding kinda like a double bass, you can still get some brightness in the sound, it's not completly muted in the trebles.
The biggest pros to this product is (IMHO) the feeling of the touch with your right hand is so sweeeeeet !
Even if the gauge seems big, the tension is like a drop D, really easy to play and soft.
I'm not gonna say that is the best strings for bass, but if you want to experiment, definetly try these ones one time! You'll be suprised!
(I did a video on YouTube just type "Jazz Bass Black Nylon" I wear a orange t-shirt)

If you want bass you've got it!
Old bassman. 24.05.2024
I've a preference for Rotosound's for my basses. But never used these before. Bought them originally to fit my new HB PJ electric, but decided to try them out on my HB fretless acoustic which already had Rotosound Jazz flats on it. They fitted on perfectly without any hassle modifying the bridge or nut as I've read folk have had to with some nylon wound strings . And WOW! What a difference. Really does get that stand-up bass sound esp. on the lower tones and notes! An they're sooooo smooth to play and perfect for the fretless. Only thing is I'll need to buy another set for my electric now, as I like them so much! Price-wise they're probably the cheapest on the market too!

Something else...
Adri 15.05.2013
The Rotosound Black Nylon strings are flatwounded and covered in black nylon so it has a smooth and satin touch, plus an edgy look, very pleasant if you are not used to normal wounded e-bass strings which can blister your fingertips, this is probably a close emulation of the touch of a double bass.
The most interesting aspect is the sound, placed on a e-bass it delivers a smooth sound, with slightly less gain and sustain probably due to the nylon surface, but this helps in bringing the sound closer to an acoustic bass, I'm using (and recommend) them to play Latin music styles as it can remind of the legendary Ampeg Baby Bass.

Great jazz strings
Hot drop 03.02.2022
Just bought my second set of these strings after 13 years! They don’t wear out because they start off dull, I put the new ones on and they sound almost identical. If anything the 13 year old strings sound better! Only reason I replaced them was the tape on the e string started unwinding. I use them on a fretless acoustic. They’re nice and smooth and have a great tone for jazz

Upright tone for electric bass
BrunoTB 16.03.2023
These strings must be the closest I'll ever get to an upright tone on my JB-40FL. Very deep, woody sound while still retaining some sustain.
Unlike the LaBella black nylon tapewounds with their plastic-like smooth feel, these strings almost feel like they're covered in very finely woven cloth. I hope this doesn't compromise longevity.
Unfortunately the A-string is more dark grey than black like the others.
Colour difference aside, I like the tone and the texture is probably the best for fretless 'fretboard' wear.

Stylish, but not the best.
enosimania 14.09.2016
The main reason for purchasing these string was style!

On an all black fretless bass these look the business. The strings are nearly as smooth as flats, so no damage to the fretboard. As far as tone is concerned, one does, as expected lose a little of the top end with these string. My only other concern is that the low E is does not have as much tension as I would like.

Although, these strings are good and perform well, I now use the Fender 9120 Nylon Tape Wound Bass Strings, which seem a bit brighter, with less "flap" on the E string.

Never buy this one for your Hofner bass
Lucasdedavid 12.03.2021
I never had a short-scale bass before and just bought these along with my Hofner. Here I am, more than one month after buying trying to change the strings, and have discovered that it's impossible to fit these strings on a Hofner bass. I'm pretty sure that there are no engineers working there because this is one of the worst designs that I have seen. Be aware of this and you will be a happy man, not one that wasted 40 euros on a set of strings that won't fit :)

Black and White

I tried these because I was looking for strings that would give me an up right bass sort of sound. I put them on a Harley Benton HB-60 WB which is medium scale semi accoustic (weird, wonderful and great, by the way) and it has worked out very well. I have used it on recordings with an acoustic band ( lots of twangy rhythm guitars etc) and it has survived the mixs very well. Decent definition and a solid bottom to the sound and, best of all, it doesn't sound like the only electric instrument on the tracks.
