This cajon is loud but not annoyingly loud. Because it is relatively small, and is sturdy, its dynamics, definition and variability of sounds are not those of a Profesional instrument. It is usable and fun (and difficult to break). It is not a toy, but lies at this difficult interface at which children instruments tend to lie. For a teenager I'd probably go for a more dynamic instrument.
