Sennheiser E901

I am extremely happy with this microphone. I purchased an E902 used having never heard one in action and was blown away by its sound. Far superior to a Shure B52A. I decided to go for the E901 to compliment the E902 as a Kick In/Out pair. The E901 is as good as a B91A although slightly different sound and others may prefer the B91A. The E902 blows a Beta52A away. The E901 really compliments the E902 and these pics are designed to be used together. Well worth the investment. And used with the E904 tom pics, you have most of your kit covered.

Had been looking for another kick mic to complete my kick sound for a long time. I'd gone through several mics, the D112, D6, Beta 52, E602 and I'd settled for the Beta 52, but I was still lacking a focus. I knew getting another kick mic to compliment the sound would give me a much better sound. My first choice was the Beta 91 but it seemed a bit too clacky. Wasn't very focused for me and seemed to add an undesireable sound that I couldn't EQ out to make it work with the Beta 52.
I love the other Sennheiser mics I have and this seemed like the perfect choice. I've paired this up with a Beta 52 and an E602. I now have an amazing kick sound before I do any EQ. The E901 is very focused, gives me a great punch/slap. It's very mix ready. The connector on the mic is solid unlike the one on the Beta 91. It's just a very good quality piece of kit. I'd recommend this to anyone who's searching for a second (or if you're like me, a third) kick mic to enhance your sound, either in a live or studio setting.

Fat and juicy shot from Bass Drum
Anonymous 24.03.2017
I use this microphone for my pearl reference bass drum.
It is the best option by the criterion of price-quality in my opinion

I installed it inside the middle of the drum on the pillow.
In combination with the microphone sennheiser e902 we get a great mixed sound of sharp attack and warm lamp sound, do not forget to invert the phase of one of the microphones on your sound processor!!!

I was very pleased with the complete set including a corporate cover, and also qualitative assembly of a product peculiar to firm Sennheiser

D
Easy kick drum miking
DrCheese 05.02.2023
I choose this primarily for the convenience of being able to throw something inside a kick drum and to not having to worry about setting up a mic stand. Reviews on its sound quality seem to favour this over similar offerings from Shure and Beyer Dynamic.
It's heavy - I assume to prevent it moving around, which it doesn't - and it sounds good on a kick drum and doesn't distort.
It uses an electret capsule, tuned for high intensity sources so trying to record anything quiet with this (e.g. voices when it is on a desktop) will result in unwanted hiss.
Beware using this as a jobbing live sound engineer, the holes in the front skins of some kick drums are too small for it to be passed through.
