Not a good microphone for guitar

I do a lot of recording for film and TV. I bought this because it came recommended for guitar amplifiers. I have a Fender blackface and Marshall half stack. I tried a lot of different positions and volumes, all sounded awful. There was this terrible upper mid range that almost distorted. I replaced the E 906 with a SM57 and it immediately sounded much better. A world of difference. It just goes to show how great an SM57 is.
