The indestructible legend

The SM58 is a legend among dynamic vocal microphones. Introduced in 1966, the SM58 is still an industry standard today, and it is a regular first choice amongst both music professionals and amateurs worldwide thanks to its staple clear sound and robust construction. The Shure SM58S features an on/off switch which interrupts the signal when needed.

Adaptable and great sounding

When it comes to speech or vocals, the SM58's matched frequency response ensures a clear and punchy sound, with midrange presence boost and a slight bass roll-off, improving intelligibility and transparency. Its cardioid polar pattern focuses mainly on its front axis and largely suppresses unwanted sound sources on its sides and rear, thus providing excellent protection against background noise and feedback in the process. What’s more, the integrated wind guard and pop filter greatly reduce plosive and wind interference.

The mic for everyone

Whether Classical, Hip-Hop, Country, or Metal – the Shure SM58 has proven itself many times over in each field throughout the years. Professionals and discerning amateurs alike rely on this affordable microphone to bring out the best in their voices – whether it's a family-and-friends performance in the privacy of a living room or a concert at Wembley. The frequency response of the SM58 is especially well suited to the voice and often leaves little treatment needed at the mixing desk.

About Shure

The American company Shure began developing microphones during the early 1930s and is one of the pioneers of the audio engineering sector. Models such as the 55 Unidyne - known to many as the "Elvis microphone" - and the SM57 and SM58 which appeared in the mid-1960s are still ubiquitous in live sound production today. They enjoy cult status among musicians and technicians alike. In the 1990s, Shure introduced the first wireless microphones and in-ear monitoring systems and became a market leader in this field. In addition to microphones, Shure offers a wide range of earphones and headphones for studio and live use, as well as various accessories.

Road-tested and near indestructible

The Shure SM58 can be relied upon for anything, even more so when the going gets tough. Its rugged construction, steel mesh grille, and an enamelled metal body effectively protect it from the rough-and-tumble of everyday stage use – and the integrated pneumatic shock absorber system greatly reduces the influence of knocks, handling noises, and vibrations.

Unexpected outing for an Shure SM58S
Robert8105 15.11.2015
I've been reading about this legendry microphone for years, particularly as a mainstay of rock bands. I gave in and bought just one even though my small stable of microphones never go near rock bands although some do service in recording choirs.
Upon receipt, I examined it and tried the switch and thought that it seemed very slack however how could I justify sending it back as I had only one SM58S so no comparisons were possible. Not fazed by this possible problem, my SM58S had a somewhat unexpected first outing that is as a comperes' microphone on a Quiz Night. I was the Quizmaster and it performed faultlessly. That switch design was almost certainly meant to be slack as it switched effortlessly between on and off between questions.
Giving the microphone appropriate equalisation via the mixer it gave my voice a flattering good cadence. Not only that; when I gave our honoured guest a stint on reading the political questions selection, (she being our local MP) the SM58S gave her voice the same accurate projection as it did of mine.
Of note was that feedback was minimal or nonexistent which was surprising as the speakers were close by. Perhaps all SM58S users have known that for years.
Finally and of equal importance is to mention the shape and design. Again I had some pre-conceived idea when I first took it out of the box; too short and sloping grip not right ? How wrong could I be ! As soon as it was coupled to a XLR cable the feel of the SM58S was just right both in weight and design. Its apparent shortness (compared with some more recent designs) was just an absolute boon to an amateur quizmaster, such as myself, who has to hold a microphone for couple of hours in a crowded room where questions are read and an appropriate pause is the norm. I say, this bearing in mind that it is not appropriate at such events to stay in one place using a stand.
This microphone is one I highly recommend for all these reasons some of which were not anticipated.

It's good enough to start out. I've busked and gave some concerts using this mic and it's good for the job but if you're looking for something with more quality I would suggest something a bit better.

TOP Mikrophon
Sthoffit 20.08.2020

If you need a vocal mic that just works
Diatonico 13.02.2022
Do you really need me to tell you all about the SM58?

It's essentially ubiquitous for live performances, and for good reason. Get close & cosy with it and it makes your voice sound loud, clear and balanced.

This one has a mute switch. It doesn't pick up any noise anyway, so it's not necessary. But nice to have. It also comes with a pouch and a holder to screw onto a mic stand.

Recommended if you want to sing live and just need something that works.
