Granular sounds in a desktop format

The Sonicware LIVEN Texture Lab is a granular synthesizer and effects processor in a desktop format. With this versatile tool for sound design, users can sample sounds, as well as transform and reconstruct them. Parameters like the density and size, as well as the length of the grain generation allow in-depth sound editing, and more diversified sounds can be created by using the 128-step sequencer to design changes in the parameters. Versatile and intuitive sound design

The granular processor inside the Sonicware LIVEN Texture Lab can process samples of up to six seconds, which can be broken down into grains that can be two milliseconds to one second in duration and used to create completely new sounds. Besides the shape, density, and interval of the grains, users can also change the playback speed. All parameters can be edited via ten easy-to-find knobs as well as modulated by two LFOs with selectable waveforms. Subsequently, the envelope with attack and release parameters can be used to bring the sound into shape. All connections to external devices can be easily found on the control panel and include a MIDI interface which allows notes to be played and user data and samples exported via SysEx data. Added to that, the MIDI port can also be used to carry out firmware updates.

Granular synthesis is an unusual technique for creating very special sounds, which requires a basic knowledge of the physical properties of sound as well as sound synthesis. About Sonicware

Japanese company Sonicware was founded in 2004 by developer Yu Endo, a fan of digital designs and lo-fi aesthetics, including FM synthesis and 8-bit/12-bit sampling technology. The company first garnered attention in 2018 with the launch of its ELZ-1 synthesizer. The groove boxes from Sonicware’s Liven series are aimed at specific styles, such as Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, and EDM and feature integrated sequencers, effects, and an operating concept that is geared towards performance-oriented applications. The company’s SmplTrek field sampler in turn gives musicians a way to quickly record their ideas and gives them a smooth workflow for turning these into beats and grooves.

To load samples with a length up to six seconds into the Sonicware LIVEN Texture Lab, .wav-files need to be converted to MIDI SysEx data, which can be done via the manufacturer’s website. Users can store up to 32 samples inside the Sonicware LIVEN Texture Lab and have a range of playback options available, including the connection of a mixing desk or a monitoring speaker to the 3.5mm line output. All sounds can also be played through the integrated speaker, and a 3.5mm headphone output is also provided for silent use. Brilliant way to start out with granular

If you love the sounds of the amazing Tasty Chips GR-1 but balk at the cost or if you like the price of the Bastl Microgranny but find the sounds harsh and disappointing then this might be for you. Packed with features and elegantly designed. Seems well made: Although the case is plastic it's really solid and all the pots and buttons feel decent quality. My only criticism is that there are quite a lot of things that require you to remember various different modes and shift+key combinations. I guess that's the price you pay for cramming a lot into a modest box. And for the money it seems like a bargain.

The greatest things for me are the ability to go mobile with batteries and create new granular synth sounds as well as use it as a through effects unit. Now that is value for the cost. Highly recommend.

Il manque un petit quelque chose

J'étais excité de recevoir ce petit Texture Lab. Dès qu'il est arrivé j'ai passé beaucoup de temps à l'utiliser car j'attendais beaucoup de cette machine et finalement, le coup de cœur n'a pas été au rendez-vous.

L'édition est acceptable, même si il faut s'attendre à un workflow avec des aller et retour à travers les touches Shift et Fonction permanent. L'instrument proposant bons nombres de fonctions cela était une évidence.

La qualité sonore maintenant. C'est ce qui ma décidé de le renvoyer car tout le reste était acceptable pour le prix demandé. Je trouve que le Texture Lab génère des sons sympas, mais il manque quelque chose, "un peut de magie", de la définition, les résultats manquent de précisions, de finesse.

C'est mon premier essai avec une machine de chez Sonicware, et pour le tarif affiché ce Texture lab est au final une bonne machine, mais je recherche quelque chose de plus qualitatif.

Nach dem Auspacken aus dem billig wirkenden weißen Stoffbeutel kommt der erste Hindernislauf: ein 9V Netzteil besitze ich zwar, aber das liegt im Proberaum und nicht zu Hause.
So nebenbei: ein Erklärvideo spricht von "Volcastyle", ich hätte eins in "Bossstyle" da. Eine genauere Spezifikation wäre nett. Schade, dass das Handbuch nur in japanisch beiliegt. Immerhin auf der Webseite gibt es eins, das auch ganz gut geschrieben ist. Auf diese Frage gibt es keine Antwort.
Also suche alle ich wiederaufladbare Batterien zusammen und baue Batterien aus anderen Geräten aus (die übrigens alle laufen). Bei den meisten Batterien geht Texture Lab nicht einmal an, Anschalten, "Bt.Lo" und wieder Ausschalten ist das maximale Erfolgserlebnis. Also kurz neue Batterien kaufen. Mit einer Stunde Verspätung startet das Texture Lab dann.
Verbesserungsvorschlag: wie wäre es mit Stromversorgung über USB ? Das findet sich in jedem Haushalt und wenn man auf dem Weg zum Auftritt im Kleinkunstverein am Rand der Heide merkt, dass man das Kabel vergessen hat, kauft man an der nächsten Tankstelle ein Ersatz für 5€

Aus dem Gerät bekommt man recht schnell Granulare Töne, aber die Tastatur fühlt sich noch billiger an als der weiße Stoffbeutel.
Richtig inspirierend sind die mitgelieferten Samples auch nicht, also probiere ich mal, selbst etwas zu sampeln. Die richtig miesem eingebauten Lautsprecher machen das auch nicht besser. Datentransfer über USB gibt es nicht, das Miniklinkenkabel ist der einzige Weg, Sound in die Box zu bekommen. Die AD/DA Converter scheinen nicht die besten zu sein. Das Sample ist ziemlich verrauscht.

Und hier begegne ich auch dem Faktor der am meisten nervt. Veschiedene Funktionen sind wild über die Oberfläche verteilt und das was zusammen gehört ist nicht unbedingt zusammen. Keine Funktion ist ohne Fingerakrobatik zu erreichen, Shift + eine andere Taste ist quasi der Standart und zu allem Überfluß gibt es auch noch eine zweite Shifttaste, die function heißt. Das ganze ist schon irgendwie durchdacht, aber die Hauptaufgabe ist, die Oberfläche nach den kleinen Alternativfunktionen abzusuchen und herauszufinden, ob diese über shift oder function erreicht werden. Das nervt und hat mit der "intuitiven Oberfläche" aus dem Werbetext nichts zu tun. Lernbar wäre es durchaus, bevor ich mich mit so einem Gerät an eine Live-Performacne wage, würden Monate vergehen, um all die völlig überladene Oberfläche zu verinnerlichen.
Und am diesem Punkt frage ich mich: was soll das überhaupt sein? Eine Produktionmaschine mit viel Tiefe oder eine Box zum Jammen. Ich glaube, Dr. Endo weiß es selber nicht, Es enthält Elemente aus beidem, die irgendwie kein stimmiges ganzes ergeben.
