Priceless but design flaws...
klaas m 21.06.2021
Great tool but the built quality isn't what you'd expect. It's an all metal housing which is great, it feels solid and all that. But the XLR connector is extremely tight on some cables, it doesn't even fit on the other part without issue. I pulled the XLR socket right out of the Sender part because of this. It could be a great tool but for this price stuff like that shouldn't happen. Not sure if I would buy again until this problem is solved.

So Handy!
TobyC 06.07.2015
I bought this to troubleshoot lines out on the road, when you're not sure why a channel isn't working etc, i have since found even more uses: finding corresponding channels on a multi that isn't labeled for example!
The diagnosis of the faults aren't always 100% but if it says the line is all good then without fail so far, it has been right. To cut a long story short, i couldn't really do without it now. We sometimes even use this to silently line check before a show. and for the price... well its a no brainer for me. i shall now be purchasing the NL4 one as well!

HT
invaluable but vulnerable

let me say to start, if you are sound engineer and you don't have one - you should. every time i have purchased one, it's paid for itself the first time i needed it and it makes fast work of testing. I used it only last month to test a theatre fixed install and diagnosed several problems within 5 minutes. that was a time and show saver in the long run.
there are a few problems however:
the first one i bought was an early manufacture model and ended up being replaced under warranty when it fell apart.
the second one lost a screw which came loose and then got left behind on the job.
by the time i bought my third set the price had almost doubled. and it STILL has a problem being a little tight on some xlr connections. it really would need a new casting design to overcome this.
now the positives -
it's faster than any other way of diagnosing multicore problems
it's light and easy to carry in your pocket on a show day - i can't think of another tester that does that
it's so easy to use, it's the tester mrs sound asks for every time she is in the workshop testing cables with me - less stress on the wrists than a dial turn tester.
on my own in the workshop i can test a 40 channel multicore in under 5 minutes with reliable repeatable results.
i wouldn't be without it but these things are more prone to damage than a big box tester and need looking after.

Does Exactly What you'd expect!
SamtheSoundtech 28.12.2016
Great tool! Unfortunately I find myself using more often than I'd like and it's always proven accurate a reliable. build quality is good, it's a shame the battery is a bit of an odd one, but I haven't had to replace it yet!
Only two niggles are the battery being a bit specialist and the fact that the two parts to the unit don't lock together particularly well, so they will come apart if they're placed into a bag or anywhere it isn't secure.
If given the choice though, I would buy this product again!

B
Great Tool, but will break
BCPhil 19.06.2024
I've owned two of these now, when they work, they are SO USEFUL!!!
The frustrating thing is, that the build quality is so very bad...
Both of mine came apart (as mentioned before, XLR slightly tight, and suddenly you pull out the electronics...). This wasn't easy to fix because the screw wouldn't hold anymore (it screws in to soft plastic, which then breaks..).
Also, I kept having problems with the electronics loosing contact with the battery quite often. Really annoying.
The last surviving one just broke by sitting in my bag for a couple of months..

If this were a product for, say, 35,- euros I'd just immediately order another one. It really saves time on a job. But 99 Euros? That just doesn't reflect the build quality in any way. This should be a tool for professionals, but as a professional i want to be able to rely on it.

MR
Invaluable tool
Med Rann 23.10.2018
This thing has saved me so many hours of troubleshooting. I can't count the number of times I've walked into a venue and had the local techs tell me all the channels on the multi are good, yet somehow one of my mics sounds off or a DI isn't powering!

Rather then testing everything in the signal chain, I can just turn on 48v, whip off the microphone and stick the Male end on the end of the XLR. Three green lights, and I have a dodgy microphone. Anything else, and the cable is bad. Follow it back down the chain until you isolate the fault, and then bypass the problem cable!
