Superlux PRA-383D?

Does what it says on the tin! Good bit of kit with big volume and nice tone. Uses mini xlr and is compatible with AKG systems or the t.bone wireless set ups. Only thing missing is an LED to remind you that it's on and I can't work out why the on off button has two on positions as the instructions are in Klingon! and very brief. It has no additional volume control but it's set to give maximum gain/output and the single battery seems to last for ages! The power pack is of heavy metal construction but it's not too heavy to stick in your pocket although it does have a clip. Tough bit of kit and practically bullet proo! I'm actually using the microphone with my tbone wireless transmitter pack because this mic has more power than my AKG bug mic. You can also simply add a mini XLR to 6.3mm Jack to the power pack and DI guitars etc. So, it might be low on features but it packs a big punch.

H
Bodypack is heavy
Harry- 01.09.2022
This bodypack works with battery or with +48V. Most sound systems today provide phantom power, so I find battery feature unnecessary. There is separate phantom adapter avaliable, but according to user manual diagrams, they don't work with the microphones.
If you use one microphone and there might not be phantom power option, then I recommend it. I play accordion and do not want to strap 4 of them onto my back.

b
great little mic
bearcat 04.03.2018
I use this as a clip on mic on my accordion when my shure sm98 had to go in for repair and its very impressive. Big natural sound. Ive used it on big festival stages and had no complaints. Ive used most of the clip mics on the market and frankly its hard to tell this apart from ones costing 4 times as much. Ive used it on snares too with good results. Neatly clips onto the snare rim. Amazing little piece of kit and cheap at twice the price!

A
Good mic for the price
Anonymous 13.11.2015
This is a surprising little mic! I've had this for a while now and done many a gig with it and it still works great. I use it for playing saxophone in church bands as well as function bands and it works well in all of those situations. The sound isn't the best you'll find out there but, for the price, it mics up an instrument very well!
If you're looking for an inexpensive microphone that clips nicely on to your sax or trumpet, maybe the gig is coming up soon and you don't have the cash to fork out mega bucks, then this is the microphone you need!

It's great for the price
kacper_convi 11.01.2021
It sounds surprisingly good for the price and can be used on variety of instruments, however certain elements feel cheap. The mini XLR cable connecting the microphone to the battery pack seems fairly flimsy.

I'd still recommend this microphone, just bear in mind that the quality is not the best, although it sounds great for the price!

DP
Superlux, super price.

Build Quality
By its nature this product has a few delicate parts: the clip, lead and capsule are all vulnerable. In my case, I use the system on an acoustic guitar. The clip is not suited to this purpose, and, although Superlux do manufacture a microphone for this, it's not stocked by Thomann. I went through a couple of clips/microphones before giving up on this, and replaced the (broken) clips with the suckers from kitchen hooks; if there is a glossy finish on the guitar, they stick perfectly well. Both the capsule harness and the micro-xlr connectors have stood up very well, and despite heavy and careless usage, have remained sound.
The preamp unit is also solid and heavy. The battery cover has come off the one I use most, but it works OK without it - the battery still sits snug in the preamp; the switch also works well.
Applications
As well as with my acoustic guitar, I have used this on accordions and fiddles playing traditional music. It's unobtrusive and portable. As a result of using them, three of my friends playing accordion and fiddle now use them almost exclusively.
Sound Quality
Pretty good. They're a copy of a mic system 3 times the price, and look identical. I doubt the build quality or the capsules of the original are in any way different. A/B'ed with small diaphragm condensers I found the noise floor to be a little higher but nothing unusable (at least not for live - for studio I'd use something a bit better).
Conclusion
I've bought five or six of these and will do so again, and would recommend them as a good value solution for acoustic bands.

LJ
Good product for a relatively low price
Little Jay 19.01.2018
I bought this for the sax player in my band. Works great, sounds good and proved reliable so far. Sturdy materials. The case is a nice bonus. After three sessions of 4+ hours the battery still is not depleted, so battery life is good as well!

good cheap microphone for brass

Good, sturdy microphone. I used for trumpet- for concerts and home recording. Maybe not the best in the market- but for its value very good.

Pretty good for the money

A good mic, especially when you consider the low price. Good and solid, well built. Sound isn't the best out there, but again, for the price this is a good, functional and reliable mic.

good

works well as a personal monitor mic however it does pick up all the mechanical noise of the trumpet so it's not suitable to be used for the live band sound. Good price for what it is.
