The downside of using directional (cardioid) microphones is that sound picked up to the rear of the microphone is severely coloured. Obviously, the whole point of a directional microphone is that this sound is heavily attenuated by the design of the polar pattern, but anything that does get through will sound very unnatural.
When recording in a less-than-ideal acoustic environment a screen like this gives the ability to have a second line of defence against that unwanted unnatural sound. The microphone itself will still behave as intended, but spill and reflections can be managed. It is just a curved bit of foam with a slot in it, but it easily fits onto the XLR at the rear of hand-held style of microphone.
Well worth it's relatively small cost.

Perfect solution for the budget-minded

I can’t complain. I have a nicer sound shield setup on with my NT1-A for “professional” recording, it I use this for my MPM-1000 when I’m singing on Smule. For 15 bucks or so this thing is awesome!

Works great
Anonymous 03.03.2015
Worked better then i thought it would! I got a small homestudio and unwanted noice is always a problem. This is a great way to get cleaner recordings for a really low price! The quality is good, and it's very easy to move it around to different micstands.

Helps with room reflections
Anonymous 02.03.2016
This little mic screen gives a helping hand in the process of capturing a clean take. It fits snugly and easily around the mic stand itself and helps block out unwanted reflections from the room. It's pretty versatile and i have used it now in a number of different scenarios - including live recording.
