12AU7 - ECC82

I wanted this as it has the lowest gain of the preamp tubes, 16.94 so that I can try it in different positions in my amps. (12AY7 43.75, 12AX7 100) This is just the thing to clean up a rather wild amp. It all depends on YOUR favourite sound from an amp! This is the ultimate for a clean sound. I just like the amp to be on the verge of distortion. so far my favourite position is in V2 (Valve 2), but of course the overall gain is lower. Just turn up the volume a bit more than you would normally.

Bringing the Behringer VT999 to life...
Zigguitarius 03.05.2021
This was purchased to calm down the drive/gain in my Behringer VT999, based on reviews on the Thomann-site.

It did exactly what I had read here, and what the VT999 really needed; a tube that gradually increased the gain over the 1 - 10 scale. It has plenty of gain when necessary, and also gives an opportunity to find "the sweet spot" where the break-up/gain is just perfect.

This is exactly what Dr. Rock prescribed!

Musical Tube
Trubshaw 05.07.2013
I bought this to replace the somewhat harsh tube that came standard in a Behringer VT999. It was just right - not so much output as a 12AX7 - turned the VT999 in to a dream distortion pedal.

Upgrade to Marshall DSL1 HR tubes
DickEvans 22.01.2023
Has been a very good upgrade for my Marshall DSL1 HR. Can definitely hear the difference versus the stock tube (which wasn’t too bad). To my ear with this tube the sound is warmer, more balanced.

Best tube for taming loud amps
ZeKuS 14.03.2024
This is the best choice for tubes (valves) to use in your pre amp section to tame your otherwise loud and quick to distort clean channel, so you can max out the level knob on your distortion pedal without the pre amp distorting the signal further, unless you want it to, in which case you can simply dial the gain knob on your amp a bit higher.

Definitely Nice Upgrade
DonSchlup 17.09.2018
Bought this to try to give my Orange Micro Terror a little boost in clarity and tone, and it really is perfect for that. It turned a decent amp into a really good sounding one.

Would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to put it in a single preamp valve situation, as it sounds flipping great!

No cons at all, as far as I can see/hear!

For toning DOWN an overdrive
Gain_Badger 18.01.2015
Fitted to a Behringer VT999 overdrive, this gives a wider range of crunch. The full tilt scream-o-crush is still there, above 2'O'clock on the gain dial, but now more gentle break-up sounds are easier to dial in than before. Much easier. It makes the VT999 eminently capable as either a pre-amp into FX return, thus bypassing the amps pre or into the front of an amp whose gain stage is a little too bitey.
