I'm very pleased with my purchase. My 6-year-old wanted something else than a recorder, and we've been super happy with her first fife. Fife is not the easiest instrument for a child to play, but if your child is willing to practice and does not give up easily, I warmly recommend getting started with a fife. The Thomann fife has an excellent price/quality ratio. This has to be the most affordable real musical instrument I've come across, yet it produces very satisfactory sound and does not have any detectable faults in the design or the finish. The only setback is that the instrument is in one piece, which makes it somewhat more difficult to clean properly.

Fantastic for the price

I wanted a fife to get the basics of flute technique without investing in a flute.

What you get is a nice sounding perfectly playable instrument, made of sturdy plastic.
The fretting feels comfortable both for small and large hands.

Having bought this for fun and to learn something new I can say that I'm totally satisfied with the product and I can recommend it to everyone, child or adults!

Cheap and cheerful

Fun little fife. I have next to no experience playing fife or flute, but I can get some simple notes out of this thing. Comes with a little pouch and a leaflet describing the finger positions.

For the money this is a cool little thing to have around. Might also be a nice way to see if a full size concert flute is your thing before you drop 3 figures on one.

A very usable flute to learn and take with you, anywhere. Yes, and its finish, not really glossy, doesn’t let that plastic sensation. It does the job and is a tool for group practices. In the Brazilian case, fife and drums variations inside local Northeastern forms.

Excellent for preparatory flute practice

I purchased this fife to use with Liz Goodwin’ s fife book which is intended as an introductory course to playing the flute. Since I wasn’t sure if I would like playing a fife or flute I opted for the Thomann fife as opposed to the brand name alternative. The fingering of these fifes (It’s different to that of the fifes used by military reenactors) translates well to the keys of a full size flute and it makes an excellent training option for children or even adults. For someone used to playing a recorder the fingering is very similar

Pros: The fife comes in a nice storage bag with a fingering chart. In appearance and build quality it seems to compare very well with the brand name fife.
It is well made and, once you know the correct embouchure, it is easy enough to get a tone.
It’s an indestructible piece of plastic and, unlike a real flute, you could even play it in a swimming pool.

Cons: Nothing of major concern.
A few minor things: People who are not familiar with these type of instruments should know that it is very short and, for adult hands, it may be difficult to use. This is however a result of the instrument design and not something that can be changed.
The colour is very plain and some other choices would be nice, but for the price one can scarcely complain.

In conclusion: This little fife has served me well whilst working through the method book. It turns out I do enjoy playing the flute and I will be buying a student flute from Thomann as soon as they come back into stock.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a child, but also bought one for myself at the same time. It's a really fun little instrument and so absurdly inexpensive. It is a proper instrument, not a toy, and takes some time to learn how to play; my tone is not great yet, but this fife does respond really well to experimentation with sound effects applied in a DAW including delay and reverb.
