Fun to play, intonation not great
Shamblemaths guy 16.08.2023
I bought this after a favourable review on YouTube. It is a lot of fun to play (if you can get your fingers close enough), but the intonation is a weakness. I find the notes to be generally a little sharp (as in, slightly too high-pitched) compared to a 440 Hz-tuning. You can't tune this flute since the head is fixed. I find several grips had to be adjusted compared to the standard baroque chart to get better intonation (at least f#, a# and d2 if memory serves). I doubt there are many who has the garklein as their main instrument, though, and since the cheapest wooden ones are ten times the price, this is a good entry point. Being so squeaky anyway, you'd often use the garklein more as a fun effect or to add some little extra frills to a piece (fast trills and runs, say), in which case the intonation issue might not be so much of a problem.

Good for the price

Decent cheap recorder. It's not going to compete with the nice wooden ones, but if you're not sure you need one, it's definitely worth the money to find out.

Good value for money

Note that the fingering is different from larger recorders. Unfortunately, the generic fingering chart supplied with the instrument is largely useless. The fingering chart for the Mollenhauer Kynseker Garklein, which is available to download from their website, works well. (A cut down printout folds nicely to fit in the case provided with the instrument.

The golden logo lasted less than a day. This is a good point because, from a distance, the instrument looks similar to much more expensive grenadilla recorders.

HI
What a fun thing to have in your pocket ;)
Hi I'm Mr. Sean look at me! 11.10.2024
i bought this and two other Thomann recorders after watching a youtube review by Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder. The Garklein is perfectly good quality and plays easily, came with a little pouch. Nice for travel and practice. Screechy little fellow, I much prefer the Alto and Tenor, but the handy little size is wonderful. Highly recommended!
