Innovative lightweight, weatherproof and sharp sounding outdoor drum
UglyKidJoe 25.05.2014
This is the perfect outdoor drum as it is lightweight and weatherproof while being stable enough for rough use. For lack of time I even forced it in a sports bag once which was a bit too short but apart from a bit of the paint of the head and the strap going of nothing happened. I could easily remount the strap and beneath the paint the surface is white so I didn't care much about that.
My Flex Drum was delivered with a small crack in the head and a deformation of the whole head so I got a replacement head from Thomann but the funny thing is: The defective head has more bass which is why I'm still mainly playing it instead of the replacement.
The sound is a bit sharp so more comparable to a Djembe than a Conga. Slaps and Tones are easily distinguishable and the bass is pretty good but not as big as the one from my similarly sized Djembe cajon even with the defective head with more bass. To get more bass I recommend to play it with the strap while standing and not just pinched between your legs.
I strongly suggest to order the bag for it which is currently not listed in the Thomann online shop but is available on order. Just ask for the Toca Flex Drum Bag in the comment field of your order. I paid 27.60 € for it ordering from Germany. Other might have a slightly different price but that's about what you can expect. The bag is of good quality with a small outer pocket for accessories and is slightly wider than one flex drum. I'm not sure if you can really fit 3 Flex Drums in there but 2 should be no problem. In fact I'm thinking about getting a second flex drum to support outdoor playing of my drum circle.
Please note that I gave the Flex Drum 5 stars for the quality with the cheap price in mind. If something could be improved I would say it's the bass sound and the strap/strap mounting.
