Mixed delights!
Kevo 08.05.2019
I purchased this as I was returning to the gigging scene after a 4 year break. My old gear was out of date with some not working. I decided to update. I chose this mixer for 2 main reasons.

a) Brand: Yamaha have always had a stellar reputation in the mixing desk department. A lot of pro engineers & gigging musicians swear by them.
b) Affordability vs Features: This desk has everything the 1 man or small group required in a desk to get a proper professional sound.

When the package arrived from Thomann, it was excellently packaged with no issues what so ever. As I live in Ireland, we use the Uk style 3 pin plug. Thomann had thrown a free 1.5m cable with UK plug in for free as they always do.

The desk itself was extremely well packaged. Included in the box were the desk, several manuals, each one in a different language. A complete waste of paper. Almost everyone can download the manuals online now. Also an EU 1.5m Power Cable. A free Download of Cubase AI. As I already have Cubase Elements I do not need. What was noticably missing was a USB cable. All other brands and mixers come with cable included. I though this is poor judgement from Yamaha. I only discovered this after I placed my order. Thankfully, Thomann as always were helpful and were able to get one included in the shipment just in time.

The first impression of the desk is it feels heavier than expected. The main chassis is metal, while the sides are plastic. The layout on the console is brilliant and very intuitive. The knobs are plastic but not in a cheap way. Everything is colour coded to enable you to know what is what at a glance. Upon plugging in I was able to set up and operate immediately with almost no effort. This desk is a breeze to operate. The compression knob is new to me and I will have to experiment more. From what I have seen in instructional videos and reviews it is a very welcome feature. The USB feature is a must now in all desks really. The computer picked it up straight away. I have not used it with Cubase yet but I have heard wonderful things. However the main use for this desk will be live performances & maybe some DJ work.

Based on previous experience, I chose to purchase a set of rack ears (way to expensive for what they are) and a case that allows the desk to be raised at an angle.

Overall, I am over the moon with this desk. I cannot wait for the first gig. I will push it to it's limits. Thank you yet again Thomann for outstanding service & support.

Another winner for Yamaha
Peeter K. 14.11.2014
I have owned the Yamaha MG series mixers ever since the first model series, and I have always loved them for their no-nonsense, clear and intuitive designs, very good connectivity for a mixer it's size and overall great quality, and the new MG series is by far the best. Virtually every complaint I had about the previous models has been addressed in this one.
Handling is very good, easy to use, clear and simple outline. Not too heavy, not too light. Faders feel nice, knobs give good feedback. And they finally built the PSU inside the mixer! That was my biggest complaint to Yamaha for the previous ones, and also the weakest link as I have had to replace quite a few PSU-s over the years.
The features are plentiful: you get compression, effects, digital interface and a good sounding analogue EQ on a single 12-channel board. A few other mixers offer the one-knob compression, but I have not seen one that sounds so good. The effects are useable. Routing options are quite ample for aa mixer this size. The EQ sounds very nice, however it would be perfect if they would have added a sweepable mid band like on its bigger brothers. Setting up the digital interface with my iPad was effortless and only took a driver installation to work perfectly on a Win7 PC.
The new preamps sound definately better than the old ones. Also, the built-in DAC seems to be a quality one. Overall, the board sounds very good. Period.
As is customary for Yamaha, the build quality is immaculate. The chassis is metal again, although the sides are still plastic. Still, it looks sturdy and a good compromise between weight and durability. As with the previous models, I have no doubt that it will serve for a long time.
All in all, highly recommended and very versatile board.

What a great sounding mixer and sound card!
Anonymous 16.02.2017
When I bought my DAW I first used a cheap M-Audio interface that had no latency but didn't have a great mic pre-amp. I later upgraded to a Scarlett 18i20, and while it sounded better, it had HORRIBLE latency. No matter what I did it was nothing but trouble. I researched to no end and finally found an engineer to recommended using a mixer.
I had researched the Yamaha MG12XU 12-Channel Mixer because I wanted to create a live performance outfit, and so since I needed a mixer to reduce latency, and the Yamaha was inexpensive and had good reviews, I bought it.
I can't believe how much better it sounds. One of the issues with the Scarlett was lack of compression in the input signal chain prior to the sound card. The dynamics were so great it was hard to get a good sound. The onboard compressors in the Yamaha really help control the sound and, combined with the fantastic pre-amps, I am stunned by the difference in the quality of sound I get on acoustic guitars and vocals. My microphones all sound 10x better than they did before.
As for latency...WHAT LATENCY? It is amazing.

T
Great hardware, connects what you need
TalZ 28.04.2015
Yamaha has great quality and design, and this product is an excellent example of something very useful, but also an engineering work of art. It makes fun work of connecting instruments, amps, PA, in mono and stereo, inputs and outputs, mixing, and USB to the computer. Compared to the lower price competion, it's simply built better and the design is hands down the winner. Sound is clean on guitar and vocals, and the FX works well, applied as you like to each channel. Every feature tried, and there are lots of them, has worked well.

Most musicians will want the USB of the XU and the faders, a good break from all the knob twiting you'll be doing. So the MG12 XU is the minimum you'll want, and likely all you'll need. Perhaps a 16 or 20 for a larger band, but for 1-4 members, it should do the trick. It works well in the studio and on the road. Rugged and portable, you'll want a travel case and some larger laptop cases will work fine. Just pad the knobs and faders, and you're off and running.

I only knocked a star off the features because of the bundled software, an outdated version of Cubase. It takes too much time to use, and while professional, it's a limited feature version, and it's AI interface is decades old. There are many better, easier to use products out there, for example Garage Band on the Mac is much easier and faster to use, and you're not handicapped by installing it on only one PC. Most touring musicians will want a desktop for recording at home/ studio, and a laptop for the road. Can't use Cubase then. I sent a simple message to Steinberg product support, and it was 2-3 weeks before they responded with a non helpful answer.

But sticking to the Yamaha hardware, it's fantastic. Perhaps Yamaha will catch on and supply their own software. Just don't buy it for Cubase. Happy mixing!

A solid mixer ! Worth every penny at a real price.
Euro73 12.03.2021
I searched high and low for a mixer, including reading articles and asking questions. The Yamaha MG12XU, filtered down to just what I wanted.
A straight to the point mixer. I have 2 Synthesizers and an MPC X connected to the mixer and straight into monitor speakers.

This mixer is as straight forward as you could wish a mixer to be. Also it can be connected to a computer via USB, and you can connect another mixer to it should you not have enough channels.

Build quality is solid, and the layout is clear and concise. Just read the specs, I have made mistakes with purchases in the past. But not this one.

RECOMMENDED !!!!!!!!

What can I say? Will turn even an amateur into a credible "DJ"!! Easy to use, just enough for a small band... Very portable... Durable... Yamaha quality at an extremely reasonable price. Just fantastic. Has all the bells & whistles you would want if you are starting out but even pros would be happy with it in a pinch. Great product.

Great little mixer
Fourwinds 16.09.2020
Cannot fault this little mixer, easy to use, quick to set up, I use it for a 3/4 piece acoustic band, (excluding drums), guitar, fiddle, bass and 2 vocal mics, I have even added keyboards on 2 occasions and it worked a treat, sounded great and easily coped with all the various inputs. Sound quality is good, its a well made and robust little machine and the effects are great too. It also has 24 bit usb connection so good quality recording straight from the mixer and also has a couple of mic inputs enabled with phantom. All in all a cracking little mixer,

Piece of quality at affordable pricelevel.
Tom J EE 29.12.2014
I bought it for my small homestudio. So far so good, I haven't faced any trouble. Sound is clean, no noise. FX works like a charm. USB connection is usable and easy to install, tried both Windows 7 and 8.1. I would recommend it to any amateur enthusiast. Most of your needs will be met in this device. Well, if sweepable mids are your passion, look elsewhere, as there are 3 EQ knobs - high, mid and low. Overall, quality, handling, features and price are balanced in particular mixer + Thomann excellent service, what more do you need?
