A highly versatile dynamic mic

Audix PDX720 dynamic studio microphone

The PDX720 from US manufacturer Audix is a high-performance dynamic microphone for a wide range of professional studio applications and represents an excellent choice for recording speech and vocals in particular. The microphone has a distinctive sound signature that will deliver smooth-sounding vocals with a very natural low-end extension which, particularly when it is used at close proximity, brings out the inherent warmth of the human voice. Its features include two three-position switches for high-pass filtering and presence boost, respectively, as well as an integrated preamp circuit, and the whole ensemble comes in an attractive aluminium housing that includes an integrated mounting socket for attachment to a stand or boom arm.

Presence boost at the flick of a switch

The gold-finished grille of the Audix PDX720 conceals a moving-coil capsule with a hypercardioid polar pattern, which ensures effective suppression of noise coming from the sides of the microphone, and its integrated high-pass filter can be set to 120Hz or 155Hz to reduce solid-borne noise in a natural-sounding way. To a certain extent, the 155Hz filter can additionally be used to shape the mic's tonal characteristics. The clarity of both vocals and instruments can also be enhanced right at the start of the signal chain thanks to the switchable presence boost, which adds an extra 1.5dB or 3dB in the range of 4kHz to 8kHz.

The flexibility of the Audix PDX720 dynamic microphone makes it enimently suitable for use in any professional production environment - from recording and broadcasting studios through to podcasting and streaming. The mic's integrated preamp circuit is a major bonus here, since it ensures a high level of signal integrity and eliminates the need for an inline amplifier. Both the two-stage presence boost and the high-pass filter - activated via DIP switches on the bottom side of the microphone - allow the sound to be quickly and easily customised to suit a range of different recording situations. Whatever the application, the Audix PDX720's high-quality components and materials promise both an optimum sound and outstanding reliability.

About Audix

Audix is a US microphone manufacturer which was founded in 1984. The small company has its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon and offers a wide selection of microphones – both for the recording studio and for live use. The range of products extends from instrument microphones, such as those from the well-known D series, to vocal microphones with complete wireless systems. The company’s remit goes beyond the music industry, however, since it also provides lavalier microphones, console microphones, and other devices for permanent installation. Audix also produces headphones and various microphone accessories, such as stands and XLR cables.

Impressively adaptable

As mentioned above, the Audix PDX720 is primarily designed for vocal recordings, but this versatile mic will capably handle a wide variety of different sound sources, including acoustic (e.g. wind) instruments and drums/percussion, and every sound source will benefit from the PDX720's characteristic sonic signature with a smooth, clearly defined high end and punchy bass response. What is more, the Audix PDX720 can be mounted on any standard microphone stand and positioned precisely as the application requires thanks to the integrated threaded mounting socket.
