Good microphone for low strings
Pablo aus B. 22.02.2021
I use this microphone to record my cello and I am totally satisfied with it (and I am quite picky!). I have tested it against several other microphones: Oktava mk-102 and mk-012, Oktava mk-219, Neumann TLM193, Neumann TLM103. The TLM102 worked the best with my cello. Probably because it is bit darker than other condenser microphones. So I think it is a good option if you are looking for a condenser sound, with grip and texture. If I wanted something darker and softer I would probably look into Ribbon mics (I am also getting a Coles 4038 at some point).
The only minus is the fact that it doesn't include a shock mount, and the Neumann one where the TLM102 is supposed to fit, is rather expensive. Because of the small size of the microphone, it is quite sensitive to vibrations, so in my opinion the schock mount is a must.
From the physical point of view the microphone is very small and cute, and quite light, which makes it easier to position.
So all in all a good option for somebody that are looking for a microphone with a round and clear sound, with a little bit of character and highs that are not very hyped. The fact that it is a Neumann doesn't matter to me, for the good or for the bad, I was looking for a nice sounding microphone and this one was the most convincing in my instrument.

The neumann TLM102 is a really great for it's price.

I used it alot on vocals, acoustic guitar & mandolin.

I kinda perfer this one over the tlm103, which has a more "presence" boost going on. The tlm 102 sounds more natural too me.

I think this product has good quality no doubt buy you have to be mindful if this Mic is suitable for you voice as it is sibilant. It is a downgrade from the tlm 103 though, a good preamp will 100% help improve the sound, along with the room treatment
