Behringer's Next Top Model

To make the Behringer Model 15 semi-modular synthesizer, individual elements and components were taken from Behringer's modular behemoth, the System 55 (itself modelled on a vintage modular system of the same name), and combined to create a compact mono synth. However, this new desktop device should not be confused with its identically named predecessor, as the hardware for the new Model 15 system is completely different and the signal chain has been pre-connected internally. However, as vintage circuits do form the technological basis for this synthesizer, the sound is eminently comparable. Like all Behringer's desktop synthesizers, the Model 15 can also be removed from its housing, inserted into a Eurorack frame, and utilised as a complex synth voice.

A mono synth with plenty of extras

The Behringer Model 15 includes many elements typical for monophonic analogue synthesizers, but it also offers some special features. The device has two VCOs with optional sync; the VCO2 is also capable of being used as a sub-oscillator, with four different waveforms. A noise generator can be added using the mixer, and the low-pass filter can be modulated by several sources, while a separate high-pass filter can be patched into the signal chain for frequency corrections. The Behringer Model 15 also boasts an ADSR envelope and an LFO for modulation, both of which can be patched to alternate destinations via the generously equipped patch field, which is colour coded to help with orientation. The integrated sequencer can store three patterns with up to 256 steps each, or an arpeggiator can be activated instead. The sound palette is rounded off by a digitally simulated spring reverb.

Uncluttered & adaptable

With its semi-modular structure and host of additional elements, the Behringer Model 15 has more to offer than a conventional bass/lead synthesizer. This should make the instrument appealing to musicians who like to use individual sounds in their tracks, but who would find a large modular system too cumbersome and complicated. Behringer's Model 15 combines straightforward usability with great sonic flexibility and a characteristic vintage sound. Thanks to the internal MIDI/CV interface, it couldn't be simpler to control sound generation and synchronise the sequencer using a DAW. Finally, musicians with other semi-modular synthesizers in their setups can combine multiple devices with each other to create complex sounds: Crave and Neutron, both from Behringer's own stable of synthesizers, could fulfil this very purpose, for example.

About Behringer

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.

Internal and external patching

With a total of 48 sockets, the patch panel is the key to the true potential of the Behringer Model 15. The envelope can modulate the synced OSC2 via the attenuator, the signal from the sub-oscillator can be tapped individually, the reverb output can be routed through the high-pass filter, and a separate sample-and-hold signal can be used for filter modulation, etc. These are just a few examples of an almost endless array of possibilities – solely using the patch panel. By adding external modules to the mix, the sound palette can be expanded significantly, for instance with a ring modulator, a waveshaper, or a multimode filter, all of which can be integrated into the signal chain and controlled by internal or additional CV sources. To this end, the Model 15 can be installed together with other Eurorack modules in a combination rack, or users can purchase a small add-on case for the expansion modules.
