Doepfer A-124 Wasp Filter

Wasp Filter

Module A-124 is a special 12 dB multimode filter using the "strange" filter circuit of the "EDP Wasp" (an analog synthesizer with black / yellow housing manufactured by the UK company "Electronic Dream Plant" at the end of the seventies). Hereby digital inverters would be 'misused' as analog operational amplifiers, leading to distortions and other "dirty" effects that generated the specific sound of this filter. The filter is equipped with a band pass output and a combined low / notch / high pass output. For this output a control knob controls the relation between the low and the high pass signal. If both signals appear at the same level (i.e. the middle position of the mix knob), one obtains a notch filter. Otherwise the low or high pass signal predominates.

  • Special 12 dB multimode filter
  • Circuit design of the "EDP Wasp"
  • Width: 8 HP
  • Depth: 45 mm
  • Power requirement: +30 mA (+12 V) / -10 mA (-12 V)

I don't like filters - I do like THIS filter.

My 1st module ever (along with an LFO, VCO and VCA) - so cheap it really is the definition of a no-brainer!

Not a fan of filters in general so I (stupidly) sold it - when Doepfer announced the SE ones I missed it so much I bought two!

The Wasp filter has its own personality, one I quite like. It is not a smooth creamy Moog style filter. This guy can punch you in the face, puke in your pocket, run off with your girlfriend but STILL come back at the end of the night and share his burger with you as he calls you a taxi to make sure you get home safely!

Your either going to love it or hate it - who am I kidding your going to love it! Nasty, spitty, buzzy little Sméagol!

Don't overlook the BP out - I initially thought of it as a LP filter and missed much of its rough-edge charm!

Pros - stupidly cheap! Noisy, cranky, angry... unique in a brilliant way!

Cons - (this hasn't happened to me but it is a known thing) Because of the way the filter is designed it puts a lot of strain on the 14-pin 4069 IC - these can and will blow. They wont do any damage, are socketted and really cheap to replace. Just buy a bunch at Mouser/Farnell and your good to go! Think of them as consumable like guitar strings and everything is fine!

I don't know how to recommend the Wasp filter higher than saying after selling mine I missed it so much I bought two more - they are so cheap you need two!

A superb filter at a great price

What an amazing little filter, packed with all the basic features you'll need. However, the real beauty is heard when you play with the Res - it transforming into a beast when set to full! CV1 & CV2 works really well (as you'd expect with Doepfer).

The real power of this filter is it's Res, especially when it's fully engaged and you start to experience some very rather odd but wonderful effects. I've used many filters before but now like this which makes it's something quite unique in the world of voltage controlled filters (it would be nice to see a CV on the Res but that doesn't effect the over all user experience).

Both CVs inputs are responsive and the ability to adjust CV2 is just priceless - for the price this is a real bargain. I can't wait to buy some more Doepfer filters based on the quality of this unit.

Highly recommended

Vintage sound

The sound of the Wasp filter is peculiar and reminiscent of the old days filters. Doepfer says it is based on the EDP Wasp circuits of the 70s. It sounds "dirty" and over-driven when the level is pushed up while it does not get into resonance. I find the LP/HP mix smooth and precise, other than useful for this little inexpensive unit!
