Complete drum microphone set

The DPA DDK4000 is a premium condenser microphone kit engineered to capture the full sonic detail and dynamics of a drum kit with exceptional precision and balance. This professional-grade set includes a DPA 2012 cardioid microphone for the snare, two DPA 2015 wide-cardioid microphones for overhead placement, the dedicated DPA 4055 kick drum microphone, and three DPA 4099 clip-on microphones for toms. Each microphone in the set features a remarkably linear frequency response, ensuring a natural and accurate capture of the entire drum kit and leaving any sound treatment entirely to the mixing and post-production stages if required. Encased in a robust touring case, the DDK4000 provides a practical and reliable solution for live performances and studio sessions, offering secure transport and effortless deployment in any environment.

DPA DDK4000 microphone set

Tailored microphones for each drum element

Each microphone in the DDK4000 set is optimised for a specific element, ensuring a cohesive and dynamic overall sound. The DPA 2012 cardioid microphone captures snare drums with remarkable precision, delivering a balanced frequency response and excellent transients. The matched DPA 2015 wide-cardioid microphones provide an expansive stereo image, making them an ideal choice for overhead placement, capturing the full ambience of the drum kit. The DPA 4055 kick drum microphone excels in delivering deep, powerful low frequencies with impressive clarity, thanks to its high SPL handling and linear frequency response. Additionally, the DPA 4099 clip-on microphones, featuring supercardioid polar patterns, provide focused capture of toms while minimising bleed from adjacent instruments, ensuring a well-defined and articulate drum mix.

Extended dynamic range and high SPL capability

The DDK4000 set incorporates DPA's renowned CORE technology in the 4099 clip-on microphones, providing an extended dynamic range of up to 109dB and an optimised self-noise level for high-performance recording. With a sensitivity of 2mV/Pa, they can effortlessly handle SPLs of up to 152dB without distortion, making them ideal for toms and other percussive elements. Each microphone covers a wide frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz, capturing the full tonal spectrum of the drum kit with exceptional accuracy. DPA's proprietary Active Drive technology ensures precise impedance balancing across all outputs, delivering a clean and consistent signal to professional audio interfaces and mixing consoles requiring 48V phantom power.

Reliable performance and effortless setup

Designed to withstand the demands of professional touring, the DPA DDK4000 features durable aluminium construction and a compact form factor that facilitates quick and precise setup. The set includes four non-slip microphone mounts and three flexible clip-on mounts for the DPA 4099 microphones, ensuring secure attachment to drum shells and hardware with minimal setup time. The microphones' consistent off-axis rejection and tight polar patterns provide superior isolation, ensuring a clear and well-defined drum sound even in challenging live environments. The rugged hard-shell transport case provides a practical solution for safely storing and transporting the entire set, making the DDK4000 an indispensable tool for drummers, engineers, and touring professionals.

About DPA

The Danish manufacturer DPA emerged from the measurement microphone manufacturer Brüel & Kjaer, thus building upon six decades of experience from the start. It is no surprise, therefore, that many users today consider DPA microphones as the utmost reference in precise sound conversion and consistently high production quality. The microphones, hand-assembled in Denmark, are always calibrated several times before delivery ensure the highest standards of manufacture. DPA is also renowned for its discrete miniature microphones, inspired by hearing aid technology, and which offer a very natural sound. DPA microphones are very popular in the theatre and public events sectors.

Precision placement for optimum results

Proper microphone placement plays a crucial role in achieving the desired drum sound. The DPA 2012, when angled towards the snare drum's rim, captures crisp attack and natural resonance. The DPA 2015 microphones, positioned at an appropriate height above the kit, provide a balanced and immersive stereo image, capturing transients with exceptional clarity. The DPA 4055 kick drum microphone can be placed inside the drum for enhanced attack or near the drum's port to emphasise low-end response. The DPA 4099 clip-on microphones allow precise alignment on toms, delivering focused sound with minimal interference. Thoughtful placement of each microphone ensures a well-rounded drum mix suitable for both live and studio applications.

In the spotlight: Active Drive

Traditional microphones often rely on output transformers to balance the signal; however, these can introduce high-frequency losses and distortion. To overcome these challenges, DPA developed Active Drive, an advanced output stage circuit that ensures optimal impedance balancing without compromising signal integrity. This proprietary technology compensates for both the output and phantom power resistances, delivering zero output impedance while maintaining sufficient headroom for highly dynamic signals. As a result, the DDK4000 achieves an exceptionally clean and natural sound, capturing every nuance with remarkable accuracy - even under extreme sound pressure conditions.
