Precision cardioid mic for stage and studio

The DPA 2012 is a compact, small-diaphragm condenser microphone designed to meet the rigorous demands of live sound applications. Its highly consistent cardioid polar pattern captures an exceptionally focused sound while effectively rejecting off-axis noise, making it an ideal choice for capturing individual instruments with remarkable detail in both stage and studio environments. Whether used on drum kits, acoustic guitars, or wind instruments, the DPA 2012 delivers a natural and transparent sound, with an outstanding transient response that enhances clarity and articulation. Encased in reinforced aluminium, it delivers long-term durability for both touring and studio use. With its seamless blend of robustness and sonic excellence, the DPA 2012 is a versatile tool for any audio professional seeking superior instrumental capture in any setting.

Advanced technology

At the core of the DPA 2012 is a 17mm pre-polarised pressure-gradient transducer, designed to capture sound with precision across the whole 40Hz - 20kHz frequency range, naturally attenuating excessive low-end frequencies. Its linear frequency response, with a subtle high-end boost, ensures that instruments sit naturally in any mix without the need for extensive EQ adjustments. With a maximum SPL handling of 156dB and minimal distortion (<1% THD), it excels at capturing high-energy sources such as snare drums, brass instruments, and amplifiers with remarkable clarity. The microphone's "open-cardioid" pattern offers a slightly wider-than-standard polar pattern, offering excellent off-axis rejection while preserving a balanced and natural tone. DPA's proprietary Active Drive technology further optimises impedance balancing, ensuring a clean and consistent output, fully compatible with professional mixing consoles and audio interfaces requiring 48V phantom power.

Effortless instrumental capture

The DPA 2012 ships with a sturdy UA0961 compression screw clamp that ensures stable and precise positioning on any standard microphone stand. Optimum placement is crucial for achieving the best sound quality: For snare drums and percussion, positioning the microphone at an angle enhances attack and transient response, while for acoustic instruments, slightly off-axis placement helps avoid unwanted resonance and preserves the instrument's natural tonal balance. When used with guitar amplifiers, positioning off-centre yields a balanced tone with reduced harshness. The robust aluminium housing offers superior protection against accidental impacts and handling wear, ensuring that the DPA 2012 remains a reliable choice for both stage and studio use.

About DPA

The Danish manufacturer DPA emerged from the measurement microphone manufacturer Brüel & Kjaer, thus building upon six decades of experience from the start. It is no surprise, therefore, that many users today consider DPA microphones as the utmost reference in precise sound conversion and consistently high production quality. The microphones, hand-assembled in Denmark, are always calibrated several times before delivery ensure the highest standards of manufacture. DPA is also renowned for its discrete miniature microphones, inspired by hearing aid technology, and which offer a very natural sound. DPA microphones are very popular in the theatre and public events sectors.

In the spotlight: Active Drive

Traditional microphones often rely on output transformers to balance the signal; however, these can introduce high-frequency losses and distortion. To overcome these challenges, DPA developed Active Drive, an advanced output stage circuit that ensures optimal impedance balancing without compromising signal integrity. This proprietary technology compensates for both the output and phantom power resistances, delivering zero output impedance while maintaining sufficient headroom for highly dynamic signals. As a result, the 2012 achieves an exceptionally clean and natural sound, capturing every nuance with remarkable accuracy - even under extreme sound pressure conditions.
