Nostalgia meets practicality

The Squier Classic Vibe Mustang bass is an Indonesian-made, authentic replica of Fender's Mustang Bass, which first appeared on the market in 1966 and was initially developed as a short-scale "student" bass in response to the increasing demand for electric basses from teenagers inspired by bands like the Beatles. The Mustang was the last bass designed by Leo Fender prior to the sale of the company to CBS, and its use by legends like Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads amply demonstrated that it was way more than just a "student" bass. The Mustang bass is currently enjoying a revival, and this model from Squier's Classic Vibe series gives players an affordable way to get their hands on one of these cult instruments.

A sound basis for beginners

As a short-scale bass, the Squier Classic Vibe Mustang bass has a scale length of 76cm (30"), significantly shorter than the 86.4cm (34") scale length found on long-scale basses. This means that the string tension is lower and the 20 frets are more narrowly spaced, which makes the Mustang bass much easier and more comfortable for people with small hands to play and, at the same time, gives it a very interesting sound with definite vintage character. The body is made from mahogany-like nato wood and the fingerboard from Indian laurel, which has similar properties to rosewood. The string-through-body bridge design slightly increases the string tension in relation to the scale length and gives more definition to the sound, while the Precision Bass-style split coil pickup delivers plenty of punch and eliminates unwanted noise.

Cool for kids (big and small!)

Anybody looking to try their hand at playing bass without overstraining themselves physically or financially should definitely take a look at the Squier Classic Vibe Mustang bass, which gives players everything they need to get started in the instrument. There is no argument against starting on a short-scale bass and then switching later to a long-scale model if desired. On the other hand, there is also nothing wrong with long-term proponents of the long-scale bass trying out a short-scale model, since this opens the door to all manner of interesting sounds and playing options - not to mention providing inspiration for new ideas.

About Squier

Fender is without doubt one of the most legendary guitar and amplifier manufacturers of all time. The company was founded in 1946 by its namesake Leo Fender († 1991), whose innovative ideas brought a breath of fresh air into the musical world. His Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision Bass, and Jazz Bass are not only classics – they also continue to shape the styles of musicians in countless genres to this day. Incidentally, Squier has existed as a company since the 19th century. It supplied Fender with strings right from the start, before being acquired by the company in 1965. Fender has been producing its iconic guitar and bass models at beginner-friendly prices under the Squier brand since 1982.

The gentle touch

Short-scale basses tend to have less sustain than their long-scale cousins, i.e. the notes do not ring out for as long, and this gives them a more percussive sound that has an appeal all its own. These basses are more responsive to the player's picking hand, and the strings do not have to be plucked hard in order for the notes to ring properly. The Squier CV Mustang bass can nonetheless easily cover a lot of musical ground, including slap-bass and plectrum-style techniques, and it will work equally well with all types of amplifiers. What is more, its smaller dimensions make it an ideal travel companion for those trips and vacations where taking your expensive instruments with you is not on the agenda.

Great bass, but a little rough around the edges
DirtyHarry19 03.10.2021
Overall this is a great bass.
I have small hands, so all I really wanted was a short-scale bass to start learning, as the 34'' ones made rehearsals very hurtful very fast. In that regard, this bass delivers: smaller frets means easier to reach frets, which makes my life easier. And also it sounds really good.
But there is a problem with this bass, and it's because of its price. Yes, it's cheap, but that comes at a cost: no versatility, only 20 frets and it's very uncomfortable to reach the last two (I know it's a short-scale, but I've seen better), and single pickup with only volume and tone controls. With this price, you know what you get, but other basses have SO much more versatility than this one, for a similar price (looking at Yamaha and Cort).
If you want something like the real thing, but not the real thing, this is it. If the inconveniences listed above are too much of a nuisance to you, then maybe you should look for something else.

Great short scale, fun to play
Lfmm 30.06.2022
Nice overall finish, nothing to say here.
I had better tuner but these do the job.

Buy some cooper tape when you buy the bass, it’s not shielded and really needs it. With a proper shield job, it’s dead silent.

The pickup deliver a pretty low output, i moved mine a little nearer the strings and i use a preamp pedal to boost the output.
I didn’t liked the stock strings but Labella make flats that are a perfect match for this bass. Sound is greatly improved with proper flats.

Now this thing is fun to play, the neck is super thin, smooth and fast.
The bass is light, it’s easy to take it for even just two minutes of practice.

You may eventually want to replace the pickup afterwards for something with more output but I’ll keep this one like this.

Poorly finished
Gynske 22.10.2020
This bass is what you'd expect for this price.
Except for it being badly finished. The string bushings at the back were loose. The pickuard was allready scratched.

All the mounted hardware is of good quality but it'll need e proper set-up. The thrussrod works great. But the nut - action is too high.

!!! be aware, it is a short-scale bass with string-through body and bridge. The bridge does not allow you to go directly through. There are no holes for it. So finding proper length strings can be a chalange since long scale strings are too long but some short scale strings may no be long enough.
