The third generation of the Scarlett 4

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4, now in its third edition, is a high-quality compact USB audio interface for Mac and PC. It features two combined XLR/jack inputs on the front for connecting microphones as well as synthesizers or other line-level audio sources, two extra line-level jack inputs on the rear panel, and four balanced outputs for monitoring. The 4i4 is also equipped with two high-grade Scarlett microphone preamps with switchable 48V phantom power, as well as the brand-new Air Mode. Electric guitars and basses can also be plugged in directly, as the input impedance of the front sockets can be set to Hi-Z. The Scarlett 4i4 also looks great and is very attractively priced. An audio interface provides a connection between a computer and various external devices. The computer in turn requires special software in order to process the incoming signals. Focusrite offers a selection of software you can use to get started, including the digital audio workstations (DAWs) Ableton Live Lite and ProTools Artist, and a three-month subscription to Splice Sounds. Focusrite’s Hitmaker Expansion software bundle is also included.

Love is in the "Air"

Focusrite’s outstanding reputation for building high-quality mic preamps has been established for over three decades now, and much of this expertise has been included in the third generation of Scarlett interfaces via the brand-new integrated Air Mode, which when selected opens up and brightens the high end in a way that is intended to emulate their classic ISA preamps – or, as the British manufacturer puts it, to provide “unique high-end detail for vocals and acoustic guitar”. Decades of experience really do speak for quality in this case, and the AD/DA converters provide optimum clarity and detail with a maximum bit depth of 24 bits and frequency rates of up to 192kHz.

Four times a winner

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 is a compact desktop interface and is therefore particularly suited to home and project studios. It is USB-powered and sturdily built, yet lightweight and portable. The four flexibly designed inputs should be fit for any purpose, and the four outputs mean you can create an alternative monitoring mix or integrate outboard effects units. What is more, the integrated MIDI interface can be used to connect a master keyboard, for example, since a sound generator of four XLN Audio Addictive Keys is already included in the bundled software package.

About Focusrite

Founded in 1985 by Rupert Neve, Focusrite quickly made a name for itself with high-quality analogue consoles. Today, the company markets audio interfaces, mic preamps, consoles, analogue EQs, and channel strips as well as hardware and software for digital audio processing. The company is based in High Wycombe, England, and has won numerous industry awards. In addition to the Focusrite Pro line, the company also has subsidiaries that include Adam Audio, Novation, and iOS app creator Ampify Music.

Get started right away

The newly designed “gain halos” (the red and green LED rings around the gain controls on the front panel) are intended to make it easier to adjust gain settings, so that budding producers can start recording immediately after buying the interface. To make things simpler still, Focusrite has included a “Quick Start Tool” and put together an impressive and comprehensive package of free software, some in the box and some available for download, which includes Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Artist, Focusrite Red Plugin Suite, Focusrite Control, Softube Time and Tone Bundle, a three-month subscription to Splice Sounds, and a software tool of four XLN Audio Addictive Keys of your choice.

Different programs found in the Hitmaker expansion

Hitmaker Expansion

The Hitmaker Expansion contains software tools for further enhancing your music productions: Guitar sounds with Softube Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555, tuning options for vocals with Antares Auto-Tune, reverb effects with Relab's LX480 Essentials, the XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2: Studio Rock kit, and the XLN Audio Addictive Keys Studio Grand Piano. Additionally, an EQ and compressor are offered with the Focusrite Red Plug-in Suite, a full channel strip offering an EQ, de-esser, compressor, limiter, gate, and expander with Bx_console Focusrite SC, and finally, two months with the Landr Studio mastering tools with five free masters to add the finishing touch to your projects. With the Hitmaker Expansion, you get both the interface and a selection of tools, so you have all the software you need to get started.

In the spotlight: Solo, 2i2, 4i4, 8i6, 18i8, and 18i20

The third generation of Scarlett interfaces comprises the Solo, 2i2, 4i4, 8i6, 18i8, and 18i20 as well as two bundles, the Solo Studio and 2i2 Studio, each of which includes a microphone and headphones. The abbreviations 2i2, 4i4, etc. specify the number of inputs and outputs. In other words, “2i2” stands for two (i)nputs and two outputs, and 4i4 accordingly stands for four (i)nputs and four outputs. The “Solo” bends the rules in this respect, since it actually features two inputs and two outputs – the name instead suggests that it is intended for solo artists or singer/songwriters.

C
Perfect for a beginner
Calin-Mihnea 25.09.2020
It was my first audio interface and I must say that for a beginner I could have not chosen a better one. Right off the bat the build quality is solid, full aluminium, hard plastic, easy intuitive layout, very simple to get used to. At this price point, I think there is no other better option out there, 4ins 4outs and MIDI.
Pretty straight forward to use, love that I've got a bunch of free software to experiment and build up experience. There is such a large library of toys that it would be a pity not to play with them all.
Works great with both platforms Windows / Mac OS. Better with Mac OS, too be honest, and I have read a lot of posts where people had horrible experiences with Windows drivers. So, Mac is the safest way to go here. (although I would love to have a Linux alternative).
The hardware and sound is good enough for a beginner, I was very excited about it at first, and don't get me wrong, I still am, but I soon realized that compared to other interfaces the sound is not that clear and it tends to clip very easily, thus, I was kinda bummed for not being able to use it at it's full presented capacity. But also, it depends a lot on your setup, pickups and pedals.

Conclusion: Good for beginners, amazing hardware specs at this price, solid, decent sound, bunch of free software to try.

NH
installation hell.
Nil Hammerstrumm 14.05.2023
When unpacking this deal, be sure to install Scrlett first. Then you will find an ableton part. Click on that and you will find the code you need to activate ableton later on. Ableton says the code is "in the box" but it isnt. Trying to find it via Abletons instructions will land you in an afternoon of computer hell. Scarlett is not indicated in Ableton website as a product they partner with. Codes, serial numbers it is all confusing.

Of course you need to comply with their 20 page terms of use. Also, as aEuropean, you will be asked to comply with US law, which is bizarre.Us privacy laws are much less strict. They will know how you tie your shoelaces. Else you cant register it and it will be useless.
Arent there laws against that?

I havent tried the thing yet. 13 1 star reviews on over 500 reviews is not too bad. I hope I´m not one of the unlucky ones.
Will update review when I have used the product for a while.

I think people should know about this, so I give 1 star, for now.

r
Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 - Great interface for home studio and more
rEMAKER 02.01.2021
I got this for my home studio to record guitar directly and for the midi capabilities for the future hardware synths I am planning on buying.
I have it connected with my kali lp 6 and it sound great.

When I was reading reviews for this sound card everybody was talking about how good the preamps are and I wasn't convinced until I tried them myself and they do sound great indeed.
The gain knobs for analogue 1 and 2 inputs light up and gives an indication when it almost clips(yellow) and when it clips(red) these colors can be be changed through the Focusrite control software.

The analogue inputs 3 and 4 can be controlled though the software only they don't have a hardware controls.
The Phantom Power 48v Only exists for the 1 and 2 inputs
There is a pad for the 1 and 2 input that you can control through the software you also use the software to control whether the 1 and 2 inputs are line or instrument.
The big monitor knob works only for the 1 and 2 outputs the 3 and 4 outputs come out as unity gain (0db) so that's something I had to keep in mind of when I was calibrating my monitors.

Pros:
Great sounding pre amps
Great build quality you can take this to any gig without worries
midi in/out great for using with hardware synths or no DAW setups

Cons:
It would be really good if it had an indication of unity gain on the monitor control when everything is set to 0db on the software.
Other than that I don't see any other cons

Overall a great budget sound card I recommend!!

J
Great interface
JanarS 27.06.2024
Coming from a Behringer Uphoria it's a crazy upgrade. I used to have so little functionality and sometimes almost unbearable latency. With the Scarlett and it's Focusrite Control program, there're so many ways to route and use your inputs and outputs + plus I pretty much don't even feel a latency when for example playing a guitar through a plugin.
There are only two downsides for me. The Inst, Air and Pad functions can only be turned on and off from the Focusrite Control program, but I do know that they fixed that with the 4th Gen. And the second thing, which isn't really a problem, but just took some time to understand, is how to turn off the input direct monitoring (but that just might've been my own lack of knowledge).
So all in all I'd totally recommend. A solid piece.
