The 4th Generation Scarlett 4i4

Front view of the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4th Generation 2-channel USB 2.0 audio interface with controls and switches

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4th Generation – a USB-C audio interface for Mac and PC – comes with four balanced line inputs for connecting synthesizers or other line-level audio devices and four balanced outputs, which will most often be used for monitoring purposes. As two of the inputs have combo socket functionality, they can also be used for microphones. The two Scarlett microphone preamps deliver superior sound quality, 48V of phantom power, and (as a new addition to the 4th Generation) a re-engineered Air mode comprising the Presence and Harmonic Drive functions. Electric guitars and electric basses can also be connected directly to these jacks and the impedance adjusted accordingly. All in all, the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4th Generation represents a superb and visually appealing interface at an attractive price.

Love is in the "Air"

Focusrite has earned an excellent reputation during its thirty years of building microphone preamps and, with the addition of the Presence and Harmonic Drive functions, has now succeeded in making the Scarlett 4i4 4th Generation version even more appealing. The optional Air mode Presence adds treble when recording, delivering – in Focusrite's own words – "high-end details for vocals, acoustic guitar, or cymbals", and emulating the sound of this traditional British manufacturer's legendary studio console. The Harmonic Drive function boosts mid-range harmonics, making it ideal not only for electric guitars, among other instruments, but also for certain vocals.

Four – it's the magic number

As a desktop interface with compact dimensions, the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 is particularly suitable for home and project studios. Powered by USB, the device is lightweight, despite its robust construction, and therefore portable. The four flexibly configured inputs should more than suffice for all connection requirements, and the inclusion of four outputs enables the use of alternative monitoring or external effects devices, with the newly revised Gain Halos (coloured LED rings around the gain controller) making it even easier to control levels. For example, a master keyboard can be connected to the MIDI input and output; in fact, a sound generator from 4 XLN Audio Addictive Keys is already included with the device.

About Focusrite

Founded in 1985 by Rupert Neve, Focusrite quickly made a name for itself with high-quality analogue consoles. Today, the company markets audio interfaces, mic preamps, consoles, analogue EQs, and channel strips as well as hardware and software for digital audio processing. The company is based in High Wycombe, England, and has won numerous industry awards. In addition to the Focusrite Pro line, the company also has subsidiaries that include Adam Audio, Novation, and iOS app creator Ampify Music.

Hit the ground running

For aspiring producers who are looking to start recording immediately after purchasing the interface, Focusrite has also included an Easy Start tool and put together a comprehensive software package comprising Ableton Live Lite, a three-month subscription to Pro Tools Artist, and the Hitmaker Expansion bundle, which includes guitar sounds from the Softube Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555, pitch adjustment options for vocals from Antares Auto-Tune, reverb effects from Relab LX480 Essentials, and the "Addictive Drums 2: Studio Rock" virtual drumming instrument from XLN Audio. The Studio Grand Piano from XLN Audio Addictive Keys is also accessible and the Focusrite Red Plug-in Suite provides an entire channel strip complete with EQ, de-esser, compressor, limiter, gate, and expander. And the icing on the cake: The package also comes with a two-month subscription to Landr Studio mastering tools, allowing those final touches to be added to any project.

Scarlett 4i4 4th

the upgrade from previous gen is good, very good. the upgrade from 1st-2nd gen is huge. Very clear recordings. Focusrite Control panel is very useful for the best adjustment ,if you want the perfect clear recording stay at green area, when you go to orange teritotity you get distorted sounds.I really missing the pad button. if you want to record direct in guitars be careful with active pickups or high output humbuckers, you will need DI box for sure. with 8.3-8.5k humbuckers the input gain must be at minimun (7-8 o'clok),no wories for single coils or low output humbuckers. I am very satisfied with headphones sound quality , i mainly use 80 Ohm and 38 Ohm ,if I go with 32 Ohms there is sligty eq distortion, no big deal , but this is a big deal for a friend of mine that have the 2i2 4th gen ,he must use 80 ohm and above for eq perfection .don't lose the power supply...you gonna need it.

UP
high-quality
Urmas Punane 01.11.2023
I ordered this for two reasons:
A high-quality headphone amplifier.
Additionally,
As a second recorder alongside the Tascam Portacapture X8, as it is reputed to have an excellent preamp.
Headphone outputs Impedance 11 Ω (versus 2i2 Impedance 50Ω)
I am satisfied with the choice. There is a lot of software, and the 3-month Pro Tools Artist license worked well for me!

GM
An Amazing Audio Interface
George Mich 16.02.2024
First of all, for a budget interface the preamps are so warm and detailed.
The Air Button presents a beautiful clarity and gives you extra colour on your recordings. The Headphone output is very clear and very detailed.
Strongly recommended.

Significant issue emerged after just a year of use
Zammylam 09.11.2024
Worked fine overall, however, a significant issue emerged as I used the interface. A kind of loud output noise randomly appears in the interface and I have to disconnect it and reconect it again for it to work normally. This is not related to guitar input, the noise can appear randomly as I just listen to music without any DAW open. Very annoying and I have no idea what's causing it. Initially I only got this bug maybe once a week which wasn't a huge issue, but nowadays I have to reconnect the interface many times a day.
