Göldo Back Box

I bought the Goldo Back Box for a Hamer guitar with tremolo bridge, which was having some tuning problems when using the trem. The guitar has a traditional Wilkinson floating bridge with 2 point achor to the body. The trem has a 3 spring set up in the cavity like so many other guitars with vintage trem arrangements.
The Back Box comes with some simple instructions and diagram/photo - mine were written in both English and German. There are some instructional video's on line from other guitarists wanting to help us with our installation and it may help to look at them prior to installation as they point out some of the extreme pitfalls that could occur with your installation - such as drilling through to the front of your guitar. I got an overview from these video's but found the Backbox is actually simple enough to install provided you follow the instructions. ***Please note that I am not a guitar tech, but my experience was that (as the online video's suggests) you must have your guitar set up exactly as you require prior to installing the back box, otherwise the installation will be much more difficult when making adjustments***
I openly admit I bought two of these (having read some previous reviews) and initially installed them both, but eventually settled for having just one, and after some tweaks and adjustments found it works extremely well.
My guitar now stays in tune even after heavy trem use and I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I have fitted one of these to each of my two Stratocaster style guitars - a Squier Affinity and a Dean Zalinsky Tagliare.

The Back Box will do you no good if you have not first accurately set up your tremolo to float - so do this first.

UK buyers note that the fitting instructions are in German, but there is a translation on the web that is very good. The instructions are clear and straightforward. I managed to fit my units with a slight work around which I have described in a short Youtube video - just search for Goldo Backbox - it is not necessary to remove the tremolo springs to complete the installation.

After fitting and basic adjustment the results were immediate and positive: the tuning stability of the Squier is now nigh on perfect. The Tagliare still wanders a tiny bit (more adjustment probably required), but is also much improved.

At just over £10 it is impossible to fault this product. Highly recommended if you have a Stratocaster style guitar with wandering tuning and you don't want to hard tail the guitar.

I have a wonky US Strat that no amount of tinkering would help it stay in tune. I brought Graphite nuts and locking tuners this improved it but it still went out of tune and drove me to despair... I was on the verge of selling the guitar and moving on when a friend told me about these little back boxes..
I thought why not, I've tried nearly everything else and for £20 it was worth a shot and if it didn't work would probably help me sell the guitar..

But.. the guitar is fixed! It is neigh on perfectly in tune, even after a long spell in its case or a whole night of being thrashed... I was amazed! Every Strat should have one installed.

Installation was a doddle - the instructions were useless as I don't read German, the web would lead you to believe this is difficult to fit and you need to measure everything to within a 000.1mm!! But, all I did was adjust the spring back a bit on the backbox so I had room to adjust it - pushed the end against the trem and drilled a few holes. If it's roughly where it needs to be you can then re-adjust the spring - it is much easier than I thought and works a treat.
Not only does it stay in tune now, you also get the added benefit of bending strings without other strings changing pitch - for this alone it's worth £20!!

I may be wrong about this, but I think I also noticed a slight improvement in tone also due to the device being pressed against the trem and screwed to the body so you can feel vibrations clearly through the guitar!

Best thing I ever brought for my guitar - Own a strat?? Then get one, don't think about it do it!!

I've rebuilt recently an Ibanez rg with an Edge III tremolo, which is well known about its tuning stability issues.
After reading many threads and reviews, I've decided to buy this Goldo backbox. Although many people are stating that one is enough (maybe it is), I've bought 2, because I didn't like the idea of positioning the springs or the backbox asymmetrically. In my current setup I use 3 springs (1/3/5 positions), and 2 backboxes between the springs. I also installed a Schaller sure claw. Took some time to fine tune all the springs work together, but I'm absolutely delighted with the results. After many days of use of the tremolo, the tune is still almost perfect.
The quality of the product seems to be solid, I had no issues whatsoever.
I really recommend it, does magic with the FR style tremolos.

Fitted to a 2 point trem on a Yamaha PAC112 with 9s.

Installation: Really easy. Set the float on the trem. Set the length adjust knob so the thread just shows. Preload the spring so you can get to the screw hole at the trem end. Hold the back box in position so it just touches the trem block. Mark the screw positions. Start the holes then screw in with a narrow philips driver. No need to take the thing apart. Release the spring preload.

Adjustment: Add some tension to the trem springs. Preload the spring on the back box to compensate - the O-ring on the length adjust knob should touch the block. Add a bit of extra preload for luck.

There should now be a zone where you can pull or push the trem arm and the trem block does not move.

You will probably need to retune slightly.

Play: Now you will now notice just how poor the tolerances are on this device. My back box is really sloppy and clunks when it moves and I am not even sure that the length knob will stay in position without some kind of adhesive.

I fitted some foam between the Back Box and the adjacent springs. This has killed a lot of the rattles.

On the other hand I can hear no change in pitch of the top E string when I make a 3 stop bend on the B string. I can also use palm muting without bending notes. Return to the rest position feels really solid.

In short this works but the quality could be better!

But then who cares at this price?
