Handy but not great in places

I purchased this as a starter tool kit for my son to learn the craft of setting up his instruments. You may feel some of my judgements a little harsh, this is because a professional luthier judging this kit is like how a pro musician would react to a beginners guitar!
Overall the tool quality is low, I didnt expect miracles and have personally spent five times the cost of this entire kit on a piece of straight metal from a tool shopl, but i feel most items here are token tool shaped objects rather than usable tools... I will give some examples;

The inch scale on the rule has been misaligned to the edge.
The capo is really stiff, I wouldn't trust it not to mark a neck
The screwdriver is really cheap, nasty and not suitable for any screw in a deep recess.
The allen/hex keys could or should be in some sort of wallet so one can easily see when one is missing.
The fret protector has some sharp edges and needs prep before use. As a pro I know that but I bet many people will discover this when it scratches their fingerboard.
The zip on the wallet is hard to get hold of because it disappears into the folds and the allen keys will fall out if not fully closed. I solved this with a short piece of string tied to the zip toggle!
I put the kit to a fair test, by using it on the next set up job on my bench. 10 seconds in i noticed a loose pot...and there is no tool in the kit for that. That, and lacking anything to polish a fret, aside the tools provided did manage to do the job.

The feeler gauges are possibly the highlight of the kit.

All in all, if you have none of the tools then grab this set, however i don't think the value is here if you consider most of the tools are 'pound store' quality.

I also think overall the product could have been better thought out with things such as a large and small reversible screw driver instead of the one universal driver provided, a nut wrench of some sort and maybe something mildly abrasive.

Paul Davids brought me here.
RichardBR 08.11.2020
Watching a few videos on Youtube, up came the name Thomann in a small clip from Paul Davids. He was recommending a few items of useful guitar gear and this Thomann toolkit was in that list.

I already have a few tools for setups etc, but having everything needed for a setup available in one zipped pouch seems like a great idea to me. Needless to say I looked around for opinions and they were all positive, so I decided to buy.

I'm not disappointed! There are a few duplicates with tools I already own, but there were also things in the kit that I'd been considering getting but was often put off by the postage costs that some sellers put on small items. Here we get the whole lot in one set, and good quality tools at that. There's nothing in there that makes me think that "my other string-winder is better" for example. All good stuff, and well worth the more than reasonable price.

A mixed bag
Leonidas from XIV 20.02.2024
I do some light guitar adjustments and repairs and sometimes you need some tool but it is not worth getting a professional-grade tool, just that ONE hex key.

As such everything in this kit eludes "cheap" and I wonder if less wouldn't have been more. The capo is horrible and landed in the trash, the wire cutters are not super useful and the ratchet is so cheap, a fixed grip that feels more stable would've been better. I also hoped for a bit that can screw on these dreaded audio jacks as they keep getting loose and they're hard to grip on strats.

However, the string crank is kind of fun, the thickness gauges is probably the star of the set and the 3/16" hex wrench has been helpful for truss adjustment shockingly often. I just wish it was labelled as such (the metric keys are labelled).

I rather like the carrying bag, after throwing out the unusable bits it fits a small bottle of lemon oil and some additional tools I have so overall I don't regret the purchase.
