Kemper Profiling Amplifier Head WH

96

AmplifierSince the advent of modelling technology in guitar amplifiers, guitarists all over the world can access a variety of sounds and effects relatively easily.

But what if you want to place the factory sound with your own favourite personal sounds? Before the appearance of the Kemper Profiling Amps there were basically not many alternatives: you could either drag (before the digital revolution) all of your equipment from place to place, or you could do your best to adapt the factory sounds of the modelling amp as much as possible to your own desires.

Kemper forges a new path here. Instead of the predefined emulation of different amp models generally in use, the Profiling Amp creates (hence the name) an exact image of the amp sounds together with the connected box and microphone. Thus combining all personal favourite sounds in one unit. In addition, the sound profile can be modified with various ground-effect emulations, Master effects, Equalizer, etc. A separate amp armada is not a mandatory requirement, because the Profiling Amplifier is already delivered with a large number of classic amplifiers profiles. In addition, a large Kemper community is now well established, exchanging sound profiles on the Internet from all over the world.

It's worth spending some time with your Kemper
Marmaduke 05.01.2014
I got my Kemper in mid-October, just under 3 months ago. The build and user interface are excellent, everything you need to do is intuitive once you learn a few basic ideas and functions. The manuals seem a bit thin but when you get your hands on the various modes they are completely adequate. In particular the profiling process is pain-free and very straightforward.

The machine comes with about 400 profiles but I have to say most of them are not my cup of tea. Something I have noticed with third party profiles is that many are specific to other players' taste and too many have very heavy effects laid on top. But fear not, if you have an amp that you love you will capture it in the Kemper - probably several times for different settings - with no problem. I have a dozen profiles from a Marshall JMP-1 and several from a Mesa V-Twin that sound exactly like the original to my ears. One caveat (maybe this is just me) I do find humbucker guitars work better, but then I did do the refinement on these profiles with humbuckers, so maybe that's why.

You will probably want access to profiles you can't make yourself and there are literally thousands available, many free, some commercial. I chose a bunch from The Amp Factory where you can listen to them before you buy. Managing the rigs on your Kemper is a bit of a palaver but anything is possible (remember to back up what you want to keep) just work logically and organise your folders on your computer.

So overall, I'm very happy with it. The test for me is whether it can make you want to play like your favourite amp, and it does that. I recommend you spend some time learning how it all works and going beyond the presets to find profiles that fit your style.

Edit: About single coils v humbuckers: after some more profiling and more experience using different guitars I think my reservations are about volume levels. When you make a new profile the Kemper automatically sets the levels—adjusting these afterwards can be rather complicated. So if you use a single coil guitar with a profile made using a humbucker you have to turn it up, with varying results. Profiles made with single coil guitars (and amps etc. set accordingly) work fine for single coils, as you might expect perhaps—I did say it takes some time.

t
Kemper amps - awesome.
tonymckenzie.com 29.06.2014
When I first got this Kemper amp I really could not believe how great it actually was with sounds very near to the original amp I profiled. In fact I developed a video at the time (that's on youtube and on my website

I also wrote a complete review of the Kemper amp later and an 'Inside and Out' thorough review later.

This amp never gave me a single issue. I later upgraded to a Kemper Rack - also from Thomann which I still have. This Kemper is quite unique and I have to say, that while other companies copy what Kemper has achieved, the Kemper remains at the top of the pile. The Rack unit has also worked flawlessly since buying it in my studio environment. There are many who simply can't believe how good the Kemper is, especially when they hear it in real life.

All products bought from Thomann with a great three year warranty... what more can you say!

You get the best of both worlds
Anonymous 13.01.2015
This is probably the best piece and most useful piece of equipment out there for a guitar or bass player: whether you're a touring musician, you own a studio, you're a bedroom producer, a session artist and so on, the kemper gives you a perfect replication of any amp out there, with all the feel and texture of a real tube amp, while at the same time you get the consistency a real tube amp doesn't have (blown or worn out tubes, cab speakers dying, issues with mic placement etc.). You actually get the best of both worlds, the heart and soul of the analog and the stability and flexibility of the digital.

SOUND :
you can get real great sound from this device but it's a copy, I recorded my Diezel VH4 and you have the sound.. but as soon as you turn a knob it react totally differently, don't expect to lower or higher your gain naturally like your amp would do

WORKFLOW :
strange way to imagine that, but it works and in the end after getting used, it's quite easy.

I would have put 4 starts but I can't use it live because the midi is quite weird, I think they have think it as a Studio unit.
