Korg OT120

196

Orchestral TunerKorg tuners are since a while widely used by many musicians, which is a reason enough for Korg to expand the program.

With its wide range extending from A0 to C8, the OT-120 lets you quickly tune any type of brass band or orchestral instrument – wind, string or keyboard.

The OT-120 also provides a wide range of calibration to support concert pitches in a range of A4=349-499 Hz (1 Hz steps). A high-precision needle-type meter accurately indicates any pitch discrepancy. The speed at which the needle responds to the input can be changed over a range of three steps. Best quality for supporters of the classic display.

T
My favourite tuner!!!
TERD 28.10.2020
EDIT to my original review:

I purchased two of these tuners from Thomann. Within about three and a half years both stopped working properly. On one of them the needle stopped moving. On the other one the mic stopped working, which means it can now only be used with electric instruments.

The one where the mic stopped working had only been used sporadically at home, and mostly stored safely in a drawer.

The one where the needle stopped working had seen almost daily use in a guitar guitar workshop, but still... I expect a tuner to last significantly longer. We have a very similar Korg GT-120 tuner (now discontinued) at the workshop that must be close to 20 years old and still working perfectly. I've got a Boss tuner that has been mistreated for close to 30 years on my pedalboard and still working perfectly.

Sorry Korg, this isn't acceptable. The quality of your products isn't what it used to be. I will definitely never buy this model again.

My original review follows below (they ARE good tuners when they are working properly):

This is my favorite studio/workshop tuner by far! Excellent for doing setups/intonation. The needle is much easier to work with than any LED or strobe tuners. The various modes makes it really flexible too. It works great both with mic and jack and responds very nicely to all instruments I've tried.

Of course this isn't a stomp box so it's not really suitable for a pedal board but for studio use or doing setups in a guitar workshop it is absolutely superb.

I've tried pretty much all of the most popular tuners and this one makes my job so much easier than the rest. Unlike certain hi-end strobe tuners it isn't TOO precise, just perfect.

The only con would be the display. The display fades out completely when looking at it from certain angles. It's not a huge problem but can be slightly annoying, particularly when using the tilt back legs and looking at the tuner from above. I really wish they had used a better display.

Apart from the display I have no complaints. I can honestly say I've never been happier with a tuner and it's not even particularly expensive.

Highly recommended!

f
does the job, no complaint

If you have to tune a variety of instruments with varying temperaments, its the tool you need. It already has some ancient instrument presets like the valotti. Has a power input if you want to avoid using batteries, a plus. If you are into early music or any non western tunings, you need one.

M
Could have been better
Milberry 18.03.2021
I purchased this orchestral tuner to try tuning my upright piano. This Korg seemed to be the only option as I could find no alternative products in this class.
The reality is that the tuner presumably does its job reasonably well, although it does not detect sounds in the far bass and far treble octaves of the piano.
Also, I was quite utterly disappointed by the build quality of the device. It is made of cheap plastic and is very, very far from feeling "solid". All the switches and buttons are very wobbly and unpleasant to touch. Overall, it feels so much different from the sturdy construction of Korg's guitar tuner pedals.
Frankly speaking, it is a big disappointment.

A
Does not work for piano
Anonymous 15.06.2014
I bought this tuner to use for tuning pianos. Korg claims that it has a detection range from 27-4186 Hz, which is completely untrue. The OT120 does NOT detect notes of neither the bottom two or top two octaves of a standard upright piano. I've tried to use it with 5 different pianos and it always has this problem.
So, don't buy it if you need to tune notes at 80 Hz or lower, or at 1500 Hz or higher.
But between (approximately) 80-1500 Hz, it works fine
