Natural calabash guiros sound great. However I was disappointed with LP's workmanship. The grooves appeared to have been cut with a rotary grinder/engraver. They were not straight and it appeared that the person using it was not experienced. After it was cut there was a drippy varnish applied which further dampened the sound. The sound was very weak.
Fortunately the grooves were only a 1-2mm deep. I used a 30mm round file to dig out the ruts and in about 20 minutes I had it sounding great. I guess all instruments need a little tuning.

A classic guiro
Steve Wray, England 29.07.2017
This is a famous LP guiro. It looks and sounds great. It is probably the ultimate guiro. It can be seen in videos of Tito Puente. Highly recommended.
