Compact recording hardware

The M-Audio AIR 192|14 is an audio interface that is capable of making high-quality recordings in a resolution of up to 192kHz and 24Bit. It is equipped with eight inputs and four outputs, as well as MIDI connectivity options. The intuitive user interface allows the gain for all six channels to be adjusted comfortably. With the large central encoder, users can control the volume of the playback easily and quicky. Moreover, the M-Audio AIR 192|14 offers low-noise preamps, switchable direct monitoring, and two dedicated inputs for electric guitar or bass, as well as two headphone outputs. Thanks to its small size and its flexible connectivity options, this compact recording hardware is the ideal companion in every recording situation.

Flexible I/Os for every recording

On the front panel, users can find two dedicated line inputs for sources with a high impedance like electric guitars or basses. These inputs are equipped with impedance adjustment and a special preamp, whose gain can be controlled via an encoder on the right side of the user interface. The four XLR/TRS mic/line inputs allow users to connect not only microphones, but also keyboards with 6.3mm jack cables. With the flick of a switch, inputs 1/2 and 3/4 can be supplied with 48V phantom power, in order to use connected condenser microphones. The main output in stereo is to be found on the rear side in 6.3mm jack format; the two headphone outputs use the same formatsand are to be found on the front side. Using two mini jack adapters, users can connect 5-pin MIDI cables on the rear side, which is especially useful when sending data to external analogue synthesizers.

And thanks to its small size it's ideal for mobile applications, with its robust audio interface making it more than suitable for everyday use. Newcomers to the recording world, i.e. those who don't yet have their own DAW, will be glad to find that the package includes a special version of Pro Tools First | M-Audio, as well as Ableton Live Lite. The Pro Tools version here includes the virtual instruments Xpand!2, Mini Grand, Vacuum, BOOM, DB33, Strike, and Hybrid 3.0, with which users can play drums, synthesizers, strings, and organs. About M-Audio

M-Audio is one of the best-known manufacturers of MIDI controllers, audio and MIDI interfaces, monitor boxes, and other studio equipment. Founded in 1988 under the name Midiman, the company quickly made a name for itself, always focusing on practical features and value for money. With the successful Oxygen series, M-Audio was instrumental in establishing the genre of MIDI controller keyboards for DAW-based studios. For a time, M-Audio was part of Digidesign / Avid. The brand is now part of the inMusic group and its success story continues to this day.

Low-latency monitoring for every session

Several instruments or vocalists can be recorded at the same time thanks to the M-Audio AIR 192|14's flexible inputs and outputs, while specially developed Crystal Preamps ensure low-noise recordings. The VU LEDs offer a visual representation of the current level in a range between -20 and 0dB. The volume for both headphone outputs can be adjusted independently. Users can also switch between the monitor mix and output 3/4, with the device's low latency a real plus here. The Monitor Mix control enables users to blend between the direct signal of the M-Audio Air 192|14 and the signal from the DAW of the connected computer. The large central volume knob is rubberised to ensure a slip-resistant operation when the volume needs to be adjusted fast.

Good for live and recording
Alex<randomInteger> 08.10.2020
A great combination of features which I haven't seen in other interfaces of the same price range:
- Enough inputs to have all your instruments connected and ready for action;
- 6 input gain controls, really helps for boosting instruments with low level line outputs;
- 2 headphone outputs with individual volume controls;
- Direct monitoring;
- All XLRs are on the rear panel, you can lay the cables neatly;
- Works even without powering up the PC.

I don't know a thing about recording quality, but for a live performance this unit is just great.
I tried first NI Komplete 6 and Focusrite 8i6, M-Audio has won the competition, mainly because it allows to set gain level for line inputs.

Réaction à chaud
kdoch1 29.07.2021

d
Great DAAD interface with a major technical flaw
diacinco 28.04.2022
So, I bought this USB-C interface to replace my decade-old interface I had bought back in the days when Firewire seemed to be undying. Little did I know about the fact that USB-C has a technical flaw that can render the audio quality unbearable. If you are using a laptop or an older desktop with integrated USB-C port and your CPU is not all too powerful you can run into crackles and low quality audio during a life performance, because, apparently, USB depends on I/O scheduling of the CPU and USB-C with audio especially needs low latency on high quality settings. When your live performance setup, like with Ableton Live 11, uses too much CPU power on its own be prepared for audio issues. This is a killer. I mean, wow! The only thing that seems to help is switching to a USB-C to USB-3 adapter cable. Again, on older USB-C ports, newer ones might not be affected that much.

Besides that this device is actually amazingly well built and I really wish they will sort out the USB-C quality issues in the future.
