ROMpler is perhaps not a term that trips off the tongue, but it has become a common way to describe a certain type of software instrument which tends to come from the companies that historically produced sample CDs. Rather than simply selling sounds for importing into your software sampler, theyve bolted them into their own software instrument interfaces so you can instantly play all the sounds and samples from your recording software. Theres no editing or sampling available, and little synthesis - purely the sounds themselves with perhaps a basic filter and envelope, so they are essentially Read Only Memory samplers or ROMplers. The format has produced a torrent of products from EastWest, Best Service, Zero-G and many more. Initially these were largely back catalogue re-releases, but increasingly, new material is being produced specifically for these often massive collections of samples, loops and instruments.
