History brought to life

The best-known stringed instruments, and the most formative influences for today’s models, date from the 17th century and were built in cities throughout Italy; Milan’s most famous historical violin maker is Giovanni Grancino, and the Scala Vilagio F.H. G. Grancino Viola 1670 is a precise replica of a viola made by this master in 1670. Its most characteristic feature is its relatively short 15.75" body, although it is as wide as that of a 16.5" model. This instrument is made in Germany by master luthier Florian Hertzsch, who has adhered with extraordinary care to the original specifications. Even visual details such as signs of wear and tear have been meticulously reproduced for the most authentic look possible. Finally, the instrument is fitted with Thomastik-brand strings and is supplied in a high-quality Jakob Winter case.

Precision in every aspect

Authenticity and quality are of paramount concern at Scala Vilagio. The woods used to build the Scala Vilagio F.H. G. Grancino Viola 1670 are, unsurprisingly, selected to exacting standards: The top is made of fully seasoned alpine spruce (Picea abies), the rest of the body of high-quality figured maple (Acer pseudoplatanus ), and the fingerboard is made of ebony (Diospyros crassiflora). The fittings in turn are made from rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia). When each viola is built, the woods are chosen to respond to specific frequencies, so as to deliver both the most precise tonal performance and a robust construction. The final process of fine tuning is carried out via the soundpost and the bridge. The oil varnish with amber lacquer, mimicking historical practices, is applied very thinly in order to influence the vibration of the woods as little as possible.

A viola for professionals

As one would expect from a master-built instrument in this price range, the exquisite Scala Vilagio F.H. G. Grancino Viola 1670 is eminently suitable for professional use. With its detailed workmanship and European woods that have been cured for many years, it will fulfil every demand of experienced violists looking for a slightly smaller instrument. The dimensions of this model ensure that it is more comfortable to play for smaller individuals, while also enabling a less physically demanding posture. Furthermore, thanks to its unique characteristics and the accuracy of the reproduction, this instrument will be of interest for collectors as well as professional musicians.

About Scala Vilagio

Scala Vilagio is a brand that is exclusive to Thomann and offers-high quality bowed string instruments as well as fully professional accessories. The products are made exclusively from sustainably grown European woods that have been naturally dried over a long period of time. The instruments are precisely built by master violin makers according to the same traditional methods as their most legendary forebears: Besides Stradivarius and Guarneri del Gesu, the range also includes instruments by other grandmasters such as Nicolo Amati and Giovanni Paolo Maggini, and each one brings its own tonal palette and lets you get your hands on a piece of instrument making history. The extensive nature of Scala Vilagio’s range is thanks to the large number of instrument makers involved, who are based in Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, the Carpathians, and the Czech Republic (among other places) and who build the Scala Vilagio instruments in the tradition of the old masters.

Sensational sound and a comfortable playing feel

Despite its shorter body, no compromises have been made when it comes to the sound of the Scala Vilagio F.H. G. Grancino Viola 1670, as the additional width produces a wonderfully full and rounded sound: This is, of course, what inspired the reproduction of the instrument. This pleasantly playable viola harmonises perfectly with the rest of the orchestra, without clashing with the violins’ frequency range; it is also more comfortable to play over longer periods of time than longer and heavier models. Besides the high-quality moulded case with detachable rucksack straps, this extraordinary instrument comes with a certificate of authenticity. And should one be required, Scala Vilagio also offers a selection of matching bows in various specifications.
