Building on the success of the US-1800, the US-16x08 is a compact USB audio/MIDI interface designed for recording studios and live performances. Its name reflects its 16 inputs and 8 outputs: The 16 inputs include eight XLR and two jack inputs on the front panel, in addition to six additional jack inputs on the back. The eight outputs are all located on the rear, with level controls for Line Out 1 and 2 conveniently placed on the front. A standout feature is the integrated DSP, which enables mixing, routing, low-latency processing, and onboard effects, including a compressor and EQ for each channel. Additionally, the Tascam US-16x08 can serve as a standalone mic preamp, expanding an existing mixer with high-quality microphone inputs.
The Tascam US-16x08 features a 48V phantom power supply for connecting high-quality studio microphones to its low-noise preamps, with independent switching for inputs 1–4 and 5–8. The front panel includes a switch for inputs 9 and 10 to select between line-level and Hi-Z signals, making them well-suited for direct guitar or bass recording. Supporting up to 96kHz at 24-bit resolution, the interface delivers high-quality audio capture. With firmware version 2.1, a loopback function enables the computer's audio signal to be mixed into the stereo output, making it especially useful for content creators and streamers.
The Tascam US-16x08 is designed for ambitious project studios and live recordings. Its compact design and sturdy metal housing also make it a solid choice for on-the-go producers using laptops or iOS devices, though it requires an external power supply rather than USB power. The interface can be mounted in a 19" rack (1U) using the installation kit included. However, rack-mounting means losing the visually appealing honeycomb side panels that also serve as an angled desktop stand to allow for better access to the unit's controls.
Tascam started out in 1971 as Teac Corporation's distributor of professional audio equipment. The name is the acronym of Teac Audio System Company of America. Tascam was a great innovator on the market and pioneered leading technologies of the time, such as multitrack tape and cassette recorders, digital multitrack recorders (DTRS), digital mixing consoles, and so on. Today, Tascam supplies the entire sound industry with products for television and radio studios, recording studios, concert halls, conference rooms, academic institutions, commercial facilities, theatres, internet podcasters and broadcasters, music producers, and musicians.
Since the Tascam US-16x08 is geared toward professional users, it doesn't come bundled with DAW software or effects. However, its built-in DSP mixer features a compressor and 4-band EQ on every input channel. The interface is fully compatible with PCs running Windows 7 or later, macOS from version 10.8, and all major DAWs. A major benefit is Tascam's regular firmware and driver updates (for Windows), which continuously introduce new features and improve overall stability. Another highlight is its ability to function as a standalone mic preamp, adding flexibility to any setup. Overall, the US-16x08 delivers high-quality performance and a comprehensive feature set at a competitive price.
