Charvel Pro Mod So Cal Style1 HH FR SW

Don' t get me wrong, this guitar is great, but ...

Good stuff:
It is a thing of beauty. Well made in general, looks more expensive then it actually is. Pickups are cool, body is finished beautifully, intonation and action set pretty good too, the neck is magic ....

The bad (annoying) stuff:
... until you use that neck more then five times. The damned thing doesn't have any finish. Any. I consider myself a very clean person, i cannot touch a guitar without washing my hands first, but the neck fretboard and back started to turn black after just a two gigs.
I am all in for the vintage feel and look, but i got the feeling, that if this was not fixed, the guitars neck would look 40 years old in a year. Neglected for 40 years neck, rather then worn, nice vintage use look. The neck was also absorbing all the oils possible from the palm and cleaning attempts.

I looked everywhere for the solution and found out that no amount of 000 steel wool cannot fix the problem permanently. Whatever you do, don't believe the lemon (or any other) oil nonsense advice found online. I am so glad I didn't apply any of it, because it would ruin the neck forever.

Anyway, I invested in a proper finish and now the guitar is awesome.

Just take that 150 - 300 eur extra in account when you buy it.
1100 is still a bargain for a piece like this.

Ich hatte die Charvel zusammen mit der Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder FR bestellt.

Gut an der Charvel:

+ Sehr saftiger, schmatzender, aber doch offener Sound vom Bridge-PU
(Die Schecter ist hier fokussierter, aber auch klinischer)

+ Schön singend vor auf dem Neck-PU, auch weil der dank "nur" 22 statt 24 Bünden weiter an der Saitenmitte liegt und voller klingen kann.
(Die Schecter überzeugt hier mit flachenm Sound eher nicht.)

+ Sehr glatter, angenehmer Hals, aber recht fleischig, etwa wie bei meiner Fender Deluxe Mexi-Strat. Das hätte ich bei so einer Shreddergitarre nicht erwartet. Ich hab mal ne ProMod SD gespielt, bei der ich den Hals dünner in Erinnerung habe.
(Die Schecter ist dagegen göttlich. Man spielt sofort viel lockerer als auf ner Paula oder ähnlichem mit eher fleischigem, lackiertem Hals)

+ Coil splitting möglich
(Nicht bei der Schecter)

+ Das Floyd Rose ist stimmstabil.
(Wie bei der Schecter)

Nicht so gut:

- Halsansatz sehr klotzig, eckig, dick, unkomfortabel. Ab dem 17. Bund tut man sich weh.
(Bei der Schecter ist alles viel flacher, runder, einfach toll, hier kommt man ohne Probleme bis zum 24. Bund)

- Damit der geschraubte Vibratohebel nicht stark wackelt, muss man die Schraube recht fest anziehen, wodurch er sehr schwergängig wird.
(Die Schecter hat einen gesteckten Hebel mit Madenschraube, was viel besser funktioniert)

- An der Halsrückseite war höhe 7. Bund eine deutlich spürbare Lacknase.
(Die Schecter war absolut fehlerfrei)

- Ab Werk schlecht eingestellt.
(Die Schecter musste ich mit den Feintunern etwas nachstimmen und los ging's. Auch sehr gute Saitenlage.)

- Zwei Potis: Master Volume und Master Tone. Man kann die Lautstätke der beiden PUs also nicht unterschiedlich einstellen. Tonregler ist bei mir immer offen, den brauche ich nicht.

Behalten habe ich die Schecter.

reçue après une très très longue attente, cette guitare m'a tout de suite plu !

C'est vraiment LA superstrat, y'a pas à dire, la qualité est au rendez vous (fabriquée dans les usines Fender au Mexique). Le manche est très agreable, profil "strat" mais avec un Radius compensé (12'' à la première case, 16" à la 22eme) ce qui facilite le jeu en accord sur les premières cases et les solo shred dans les aigus. vernis satiné qui donne un feeling "bois naturel" hyper agréable.
Les frettes sont bien polies et ne débordent pas du manche. Par contre, le manche était trop droit quand la guitare est arrivée, et ça frisait sur les premières cases.... Heureusement, l'accès génial au truss rod m'a permis de vite corriger ça... Et il a fallu que je desserre beaucoup , car avec les renforts de carbone présents dans le manche, il faut insister pour que le truss rod agisse... mais c'est aussi une garantie de stabilité du manche..

Coté mécaniques / vibrato, c'est du bon, rien à redire, et ça tient bien l'accord.
Coté son : Les TB6 et SH6n sont puissants... peut-être même un peu trop, car si un SH1n splitté donne un beau son de simple bobinage.. je trouve que le SH6n splitté en est assez éloigné. Bref... c'est taillé pour le hard rock et faudra pas compter jouer du Stevie Ray dessus ^__^
Par contre, la position centrale du sélecteur splitte automatiquement les micros et active les bobines intérieures (façon Petrucci), ce qui donne vraiment un très beau son clair avec un creusé et une belle brillance... ideal pour les arpèges..

Petit point noir par contre : ce sélecteur coupe le son entre chaque position, ce qui donne lieu à un petit crachotement quand on change de micro...

sinon, rien à redire.. elle est taillée pour le rock/hard rock/shred, et elle le fait très bien ! Ses micros très puissants la rendront peut-etre un peut moins polyvalente que d'autres... mais plairont aux shreddeurs et metalleux comme moi.
